The annual reveal of the new body of work by Paul Romano at Editions is becoming something of a tradition with this the third year that Paul is opening our season of Autumn shows. Paul’s work is an abstraction of the environment that surrounds him and there are always recognisable visual clues in all of his painting, of the places colours and textures that have informed and inspired the pieces. You can detect scraps of an industrial landscape, maritime themes mixed with ancient symbols and structures.
His paintings have an emotional immediacy that is completely engaging and yet continues to reward further analysis. His use of colour, texture and composition is assured and considered. These newer works feature more of the ephemera that Paul encounters during the course of his day and collage, always present in his work, has become a more significant element of the new pieces. Some of the paintings are inspired by Paul’s fascination with ancient sites and symbols, interspersed with colours and found objects from his everyday environment.
It is unusual for the work of an artist working primarily in the abstract to have such a universal appeal, but Paul’s work seems to be understood and appreciated by a variety of audiences. Although Paul seldom exhibits outside the North West, he has works in private collections in London, New York and the Far East.
The new work is exciting and ultimately uplifting, we’re sure you’ll be as intrigued by it as we are.
