It is also the launch of WNO’s brand new commission, The Sacrifice at the Empire Theatre Liverpool.

The Sacrifice – which is being produced in partnership with the Liverpool Culture Company - is a compelling and timeless story of a ruler’s ultimate sacrifice to safeguard the future of his wartorn, faction-ridden country. It is composed by one of the world’s greatest living composers, James MacMillan, with a libretto by award-winning poet Michael Symmons Roberts. James MacMillan will also conduct the production, which is directed by Katie Mitchell.
