Il Trovatore Opera in St Helens - Wednesday

UPDATE: This show has been cancelled.

IL TROVATORE
BY GIUSEPPE VERDI

ST HELENS THEATRE ROYAL
WEDNESDAY 27th SEPTEMBER

Set in 16th century Spain, Il Trovatore has more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie murder mystery. Il Trovatore is full of mistaken identity, jealousy and revenge: babies are supposedly bewitched, whilst singers are imprisoned, swallow poison or are beheaded by their long lost brother. Who said opera was boring?

Apart from all that, Il Trovatore is one of Verdi’s finest musical achievements. Once heard, who could ever forget the famous Anvil Chorus, the tenor’s thrilling Di quella pira and the beautiful Miserere. The countless breathtaking arias, duets and choruses will take you to the heart of this passionate tale and leave an everlasting impression.

The cast features the brilliant Georgian tenor Irakli Grigali (making his debut in St Helens) as Manrico, as well as soprano Sarah Estill (acclaimed for her recent performances in Tosca) as Leonora. It also includes the talented children from the Elizabeth Hill School of Dance and Drama in St Helens who will join Opus 1 Opera for the performance. For more information on Il Trovatore or to register for our free mailing list, please visit www.opus1opera.co.uk

Tickets for Il Trovatore are on sale now and available from just £17.50 (£15.50 concessions, discounts available for groups of ten or more). They can be booked from St Helens Theatre Royal Box Office on 01744 756000.Show Cancelled

Black History Month - Coming Soon

STEALING HISTORY DEBATE
Black History Month at National Museums Liverpool

National Museums Liverpool is hosting a free public debate on the repatriation of African objects during Black History Month on Thursday 12 October 2006.

Stealing History is a day of workshops and debate which discuss museums and cultural property from 10-4pm. The objectives of the day include:

* to understand the principles of repatriation
* to explore the ethical and moral issues of repatriation
* to explore the origins of museum artefacts
* to understand the purpose of museums
* to investigate problems facing museums in Africa
* to identify ways for future action and developing relationships.

Key speakers leading the workshops and speaking in the debate are Dr Barbara Bush (senior lecturer in history, Sheffield Hallam University), Dr Boris Wastiau (curator of Central African art and ethnography, Royal Museum of Central Africa, Tervuren, Belgium), Dr Claude Ardouin (former director of the National Museums of Mali, now head of the African section, department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas at the British Museum) Dr Ray Costello (historian of Black British community) and Dr Zachary Kingdon (curator of African collections at National Museums Liverpool). More guest speakers are to be confirmed.

Workshops will stimulate discussion by encouraging participants to consider the various issues surrounding repatriation and how museums represent Britain’s Black community.

Abdullah Badwi, community development co-ordinator says: “This is an important opportunity for people from all walks of life, from all cultural backgrounds, to debate and challenge the way museums have gone about acquiring their collections and to discuss the options for the future of these objects”.

For members of the public to book their free place please contact Abdullah Badwi on 0151 478 4814

Have you ever wondered how the other half live? Meet the people who live in two separate buildings on opposite sides of a city: one in a wealthy avenue and the other in a run-down alley. Eight contemporary singers and
musicians tell the story of parallel yet opposite lives in this comic book opera.
This extraordinary multi-media experience is based on Ben Katchor’s cult comic strip with music by the acclaimed Bang on a Can co-founders Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe. Katchor’s words and drawings are brought dramatically to life in this unmissable UK Premiere.

Haunting electronic songs of love and longing composed by Mikel Rouse are fused with scenes of Paris as you’ve never seen it before. Original film footage provides a video backdrop for the live performers, in turn captured live and screened, creating a 3D film right before your eyes.

Heritage Opens Days Start Thursday 7th Sept

Heritage Open Days 2006

o New programme of character walks introduced for 2006
o 08 Place hosts 'talking suitcases' exhibition on Welsh history
o TV's David Dickinson to appear at St George's Hall on Saturday

AN EXTENDED eleven-day Heritage Open Days programme launches Thursday September 7th 2006

heritageod-1.jpgHistoric buildings across Merseyside will be opening their doors for free, allowing the public to sample the rich cultural and architectural offerings right on their doorstep.

And this year it's not just classical greats like St George's Hall and the Royal Liver Building on show; modern icons including Anfield and Goodison football stadiums and even the Society nightclub on Duke Street are in the programme.

One of the highlights of this year's programme is a visit by TV's David Dickinson to the St George's Hall open day on Saturday, September 9. The Bargain Hunt star will be hosting a special antique and collectable valuation event, which will be filmed for broadcast later in the year.

New for Heritage Open Days 2006 is a programme of special walks and tours around Merseyside's historic sites, led by '08 Performance Guides' - tour guides dressed in period costume. Walks include "Meet yer down the Cavern" - led by a character from the time of the Beatles' early success and "Back to the beginning" - a conversation with Bertha Archer, wife of Britain's first Black Mayor.

Continuing the heritage theme, the 08 Place in Whitechapel is hosting a brand new exhibition celebrating Liverpool's Welsh roots.

The Eloquent Suitcase exhibition features 12 suitcases, each containing a speaker telling an individual story about the Welsh experience in Liverpool, accompanied by specially-composed music by Welsh composer Andrew Griffiths. The 08 Place will also be stocking copies of the Welsh Roots/Welsh Routes produced by Community Spirit in conjunction with Phil Cope. The exhibition opens at the 08 Place tomorrow (September 7), where staff will be serving special Welsh cakes - or 'Picau ar y mean' - and will be on show until September 16, after which it will move to Liverpool Cathedral.

The Heritage Open Days brochure is available from tourist information centres, visitor attractions, and the 08 Place. Full details are also available on the Liverpool Culture Company's website: www.liverpool08.com/AboutLiverpool/WorldHeritage/HeritageOpenDays/index.asp
