Soft Folds, Hard Edges
17 July – 22 August 2010
When you first encounter Geoff Parr’s works you see a fusion between contemporary fashion design and painting as structure. However there is much more to them than that. His works, at first glance, seem to be constructed from a series of soft folds but detailed examination reveals hard edges with different, almost incompatible, materials all brought together to create something new.
The stitching, folding and cutting need to be seen as abstractions of the processes which mould our worldwhere “to stitch’ is an act of unification, “to fold” is to construct possibilities of anew worlds etc. Thus at a deeper level
Geoff has reinvented the role of thecanvas to question the relationship between not just fine and popular art but ourselves and the world around us.
