Liverpool Biennial with Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre Presents Encounters
Part of the Liverpool Biennial touring programme
1 April – 9 September 2017
This spring Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre opens an exhibition of artworks from the Liverpool Biennial 2016 festival of contemporary art. Works from Céline Condorelli, Audrey Cottin, Mark Leckey and Rita McBride will make up the exhibition Encounters, which includes interactive sculptures, film and immersive soundscapes.
In the Moving Image Gallery, Mark Leckey presents Dream English Kid 1964 – 1999 AD until 30 May. The Turner Prize-winning artist assembled the film by locating archival material from television shows, advertisements and music online to create a record of all the significant events of his life between the 1970s and 1990s.
Entries and doorways are often used as a way to show social hierarchies, exclusions and inclusions. In the Sculpture Centre, Céline Condorelli’s portal for children invites them to enter a world of their own invention, whilst an audio portal draws inspiration from Ancient Greek theatre.
Audrey Cottin’s work Lift Me was inspired by Robert Filliou’s belief that “everybody is perfect” and invites the audience to activate the work through collaboration.
Rita McBride’s Perfiles are sculptural memories of buildings consumed by time. They depict the outline or ‘profile’ of houses in Pompeii, a city in the South of Italy that was buried in metres of ash and pumice after the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD.
The exhibition is part of Liverpool Biennial’s inaugural touring programme, with exhibitions of works by leading international artists commissioned and presented at the 2016 Biennial touring to venues in Northern England throughout 2017 and 2018. The touring programme is supported with National Lottery funding through Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring fund.
This groundbreaking project will enable Bury Art Museum and other venues across the North of England to develop new audiences and build capacity within the partner organisations, collaborating together for the first time.
Encounters is on display from 1 April – 9 September 2017 at Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre, Moss Street, Bury. Mark Leckey’s Dream English Kid 1964 – 1999 will be on view in the Moving Image Gallery until 13 May 2017. There will be an exhibition preview on Friday 31 March 2017, 7pm – 9pm. The museum is free entry.
