2 July – 3 September 2011 at the Bluecoat Display Centre. ‘Translation’ Dia Batal – part of the Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival
Viewing: Friday 1 July 2011 18-19.30
For the 2011 programme the Display Centre are working with Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival curator Eckhard Thiemann on the involvement, and ongoing partnership, of the Bluecoat Display Centre with the festival. The Display Centre will be hosting an exhibition by the Beirut born designer Dia Batal featuring furniture and textiles infused with poetic texts in Arabic calligraphy.
“The work I do is often context specific and enables audience and user to physically engage with it. I am interested in the way the design object functions as a device that has impact on people’s lives within the public and private space, in relation to its social, cultural, and political concerns. I’ve graduated from the Lebanese American University in Beirut with an AA in Fine Arts and BA in Interior Architecture, and have recently completed a MA in Design, Critical Practice from Goldsmiths, London.”
Forthcoming event….. Dia Batal Calligraphy Workshop 3rd July 2011
Dia will lead a workshop which looks at the process of using poetry and words with design, using text as meaning and script as visual shapes. Based on a combination of paper cuts with Latin or Arabic script and using English, Arabic or any other poetry, which participants may want to work with.
