The LS Lowry painting of the Liverpool waterfront goes on display from today in the focus room at Liverpool Tate.

ONE can only speculate that Laurence Stephen Lowry, who was largely ignored as a painter until his later years, would be cock-a-hoop at the critical adulation his creations now attract. He would surely be more than a tad sceptical at the contradictions of them fetching such huge sums at auctions.

Like so many of the matchstick figures that have become his trademark, the artist was a simple man who was hugely suspicious, even contemptuous, of the art world and what he regarded as the pretentious London scene. For most of his working life Lowry earned his corn as a rent collector.

He would have chuckled perhaps at the latter day scrambles to acquire his works, via various avenues. Indeed, only last month three valuable Lowry paintings were stolen - "to order" according to experts - from an art gallery in Cheshire where the largest, an oil entitled Two Women and Children, was valued at over £115,000.
