STOK charged with criminal damage

stok imageVia Daily Post
Liverpool graffiti artist STOK has been charged with criminal damage after painting walls in Roscoe Street and is due to appear before magistrates next month. STOK's graffiti art is a familiar sight around the city centre, some of his work was commissioned by the Biennial project to brighten up some derelict buildings. He claims he had permission from the owners to paint the mural.

Hmm, yeh, sounds like a really nice bloke. Not!

Nah man stok is da man he proper safe i met him 2day in town and he took me and my crew 2 the new lost art shop so dont diss my man hes one of liverpools best legends brapp!!!

Yeh agreed, hes a knobhead. Some of his work is okay, but he's realy agressive and an egotist. His violence gives decent grafiti artists a bad name and justifies people being against it.I've seen much better examples of grafiti.

Stok only has one style, NONE. When is this overgrown kid going to wise up.......regularly says rubbish like"I'm in the top ten graff artists in U.K. etc. Delusions of grandeur in the extreme. Bullys kids, and generally ruins the scene in general. Nuff said.

Hmmm there certainly seems to be a fair bit of mixed opinion of the man here ... I suppose its better people talking about you than not at all, or so they say... all publicity is good publicity and all that. To misquote Oscar Wild or someone..?!

In my opinion the Stok persona and "graffiti art" is all about the expression of the larger than life character within and projection of his ego for all to see.
Stok's work often features a series of outlandish characters, composed with bold shapes and vivid use of colour. It could be argued that many of the characters could be making some sort of "statement" about something in a similar manner to Banksy, however Stock appears to be more about the delivery of the statement than the statement itself. In an attention grabbing "Look at me, look at me!" style.

Anyone who has met Stock will understand what I mean here, he's definitely a larger than life character, maybe a bit of an egotist, but then think of any of the great classical artists... they were all pretty mad, bonkers, and very "different" individuals, and caused divided opinion in their time.

Stok rose to "fame” during the 2004 biennial, and that “Blue Bunny Phase” was in my opinion his most notable and prolific period of work. I'm waiting to see what if anything he can pull out of the bag this year, as what I saw at the hub wasn't much to write home about. (Maybe the Red Bull controversy was part to blame here)

Anyway that’s just what I think, so there

Sorry Marc, but that's nonsense. Trying to compare Stok to a classical artist is such an insult (they, at least, had great pieces of timeless work to show for their 'behavioural problems'), and in trying to justify Stok’s aggression and violence as being part of 'in the name of provocative art' is an over-used and tired concept.

For me, his work is low in quality and predictable (it's all been done before); he doesn't have any original ideas or challenge anyone's viewpoint; and his creativity is purely about himself (wow! I'M STOK! LOOK AT ME!). I’ve seen a lot of better examples of graffiti - Stok is not in those artists’ leagues and never will be. He doesn’t appear to have the artistic intelligence to achieve that, unlike Banksy who I feel does. Stok just bullies people into believing in him and then plasters his name all over a wall. Yawn.

Stok's agenda is about enlarging his frail ego, not about artistic needs and he does not deserve this sort of attention.

Agreed.. Youre giving him more attention that he deserves.. Seen some of Stok's stuff and it says nothing about anything; Can't believe anyone's bothering to have a debate about him.. especially when you look at what some of the biennial artists have created..

STOK IS A LEGEND

And any one who says otherwise doesnt have a clue about the culture he represents.

If you dont like his style, then fair enough, but you cant question the quality of his work, and in the eyes of many artists who are of high quality and international recognition, STOK is right up there with them. If you ask me, its their opinion if any that would matter, coz they know what the culture is about.

Stok is Liverpools longest standing, and most prolific graffiti artist.
Without him, the scene in Liverpool wouldnt really exist. His crew TCT, are the only real L'pool graf crew, and consist of the cities best writers.
He is massivley repspected by all artists (DJs Rappers and Dancers) in the L'pool HIP HOP community, of which he is an integral part.
He is our cities main propagator of Legal graffiti art, which brightens up our streets, and represents some real culture.
He is also the man behind the Liverpool Hub Festival, which is an ever growing weekend festival which represents international graffiti artists, break dancers, and live hip hop, This is one of only a few of this type in the country, and is funded by the Liverpool City Council, who also recognize that stok is one of the cities institutions.

If you have never tried to create art with spray paint, you wouldnt know that it is one of the most difficult tools to use to create precise art.
If you have ever had the pleasure to watch Stok compose a peice, you would see that his skill is amazing, as fast and precise as a ninja. A true martial artist.

So if you think he has no skill and is of low quality
- YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR ON ABOUT!

If you dont appreciate that he is an integral part of liverpool culture
-YOUR PROBABLY NOT FROM AROUND HERE!

If you dont like his artistc style
-REMEMBER THAT THE APPRECIATION OF ART IF SUBJECTIVE. ITS UP TO YOU IF YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, but if you dont like it... IT DOESNT MEAN ITS SHIT.

And if you dont like his personality....
ITS PROBABLY COZ YOU GOT ON HIS TITS, AND MADE HIM HAVE TO THREATEN TO MARTIAL ARTS YOUR HEAD IN!!!!!!
If your from the posh arty farty end of the artistic spectrum, you might not understand what he does, or what he says.
But gaurenteed.....If you go away and grow a pair of bollocks, come back and look again, you will notice that that his art is boss, and he is a sound guy, a bit bonkers like the best of us, but as long as you dont get on his tits, he wont kick you in the teeth.

STOK!!!!!! A LIVING LEG END!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, I'm pretty surprised to hear all this talk about Stok being aggressive. I've met him a number of times and he was nothing but down to earth and genuinely friendly each and every time. Skills-wise, whilst you might not like his work, you've to respect that he has his own unique style, one that is instantly recogniseable and one that does indeed brighten up the streets of Liverpool.

Stok is Sickkkk man, cant wait to c is canvas's at fat cap tomorrow! How can any1 say is work is shit? haha was well funny at hubb like i saw it all lmao.
