Pablo Picasso. The Studio 1955 L'Atelier. Presented by Gustav and Elly Kahnweiler 1974, accessioned 1994
Liverpool artwork of the week 2010-21. ‘The Studio’ 1955 (L’Atelier) by Pablo Picasso in ‘Picasso: Peace and Freedom’ at Tate Liverpool 21 May – 30 August 2010.
It has to be Picasso this week as the new exhibition has just opened. There are so many excellent pieces but this is one of my favourites.
This painting depicts the studio at ‘La Californie’, the large Art Nouveau villa near Cannes where Picasso and his partner Jacqueline Roque moved in the summer of 1955. In October and November of that year Picasso depicted his studio twelve times. The room is empty but Picasso’s presence is strongly felt in his tools and the sculpted head on a modelling stand. The studio had been a favourite subject for his friend and rival Henri Matisse, and it has been suggested that this series was a direct response to the artist’s death the previous year.

Picasso: Peace and Freedom
at Tate Liverpool
21 May – 30 August 2010
Admission £10 (£8 Concessions)
A major exhibition bringing together over 150 works by Pablo Picasso from across the world is presented at Tate Liverpool. Picasso: Peace and Freedom reveals a fascinating new insight into the artist’s life as a tireless political activist and campaigner for peace, challenging the widely-held view of the artist as creative genius, playboy and compulsive extrovert.

Picasso revealed as a feminist in new exhibition – Telegraph.
That is surprising news.
Exhibition opens 21 May 2010 – tickets are on sale now.
Notorious for his promiscuity and erotic paintings of women, Pablo Picasso’s image as a womaniser is as famous as his work.
But a new exhibition on the Spanish artist will portray him in a radically new light, as a staunch supporter of the women’s movement.

Art on the Waterfront 2009
Great! Put the dates in your diary.
· Liverpool to stage two massive On The Waterfront weekends this July and August
· Parties by the river inspired by forces of nature – air, earth, fire and water
· First weekend also explores war and peace with events celebrating Lennon and Picasso
· Second weekend will see newlook waterfront host an international festival of dance
NATURE’S forces are set to combine to dramatic effect this summer when Liverpool draws on the elements of air, earth, fire and water in two incredible weekends of fantastic free events.
The ‘On the Waterfront’ weekends of culture in July and August will erupt with a feast of family fun, closely followed by the biggest free dance festival in the UK this year featuring the cream of European outdoor dance, all tied together by the natural elements that have helped shape Liverpool into the great city it is today.
In addition, the world changing human elements of ‘War and Peace’ will be explored using two giants of 20th century culture – John Lennon and Pablo Picasso – with events drawing on the landmark Picasso: Peace and Freedom Exhibition at TATE Liverpool, and the John Lennon ‘White Feather – the Spirit of Lennon’ exhibition at the Beatles Story at the Albert Dock; both icons were heavily influenced by the issues of war and peace in their work and lives.

Picasso: Peace and Freedom
Tate Liverpool: 21 May – 30 August 2010
Admission £10 (£8 Concessions)
Tate Liverpool have been working on this secretly for a few years now and called a Press Conference today for the Big Announcement.
My initial reaction, I admit was ‘hmm, Picasso again, haven’t we done that before?’ But now I’m actually quite excited as the show focuses on Picasso’s political activism and campaigning for peace and covers the period 1944 to 1973. And now I think about it, I’ve only seen Picasso’s in isolation so I’m looking forward to being immersed in a massive show of these works in context.
