Media Facades – SMS Slingshot at FACT

This was fun. Last Friday we were in Ropewalks square in front of FACT firing sms messages onto the wall using a digital slingshot. People in Berlin were doing the same, so it was an unusual way of communicating.

At the same time the new screen on the front of FACT was switched on, this will launch properly on 3 September at dusk with more Media Facade events to follow.

Have Your Clothes Turned Into Art!

Kaarina-e-versionsml

My clothes are already art of course, some are installations that have taken many years to perfect.

Donate a piece of your clothing to become part of an artwork to be exhibited at this year’s Liverpool Biennial festival!

Finnish artist Kaarina Kaikkonen is making an artwork for FACT’s Biennial exhibition which runs from 18 September – 28 November. As part of this exhibition she plans to create a huge sculpture made up of entirely of clothing donated from Merseyside residents. In particular we require light-weight tops, such as vests, t-shirts, blouses and shirts from men, women and children.

Each year Liverpool Biennial has a theme. This year’s is Touched. At FACT, the theme is translated into the idea of “a mother’s touch”. Kaarina’s sculpture will reflect on the maternal act of doing the laundry, which can be understood as a basic symbol of healing, care, and unconditional love.

If you can, please post a piece of clothing (just something you might send to a charity shop anyway) before 07 September. Alternatively you can bring your items in to the FACT building (88 Wood Street, Liverpool, L1 4DQ) and leave them at our Information Desk in the foyer. Please label the clothing with your name, postcode and supply an email address so we can keep you updated and send a formal invitation to the exhibition.

Unfortunately we cannot refund costs of postage or return clothing. We hope you understand. However, we will be listing the names of all those who kindly donated next to the artwork which will be on display throughout the 10 weeks of the exhibition. All items will be donated to Oxfam following the show.

If you need more information, don’t hesitate to get back to us and ask – you can reach Ellie Overs at ellie.overs@fact.co.uk or 0151 707 4410.

Artwork of the Week – Julius von Bismarck

Julius-von-Bismarck

Liverpool artwork of the week 2010-25. ‘The Space Beyond Me’ (2010) by Julius von Bismarck in Persistance of Vision at FACT, 18 June – 30 August 2010

A lot to see and interact with in this new exhibition at FACT.

Premiered at this year’s Berlin transmediale festival, von Bismarck’s large-scale installation takes the form of a 16mm camera converted into a projector. The device stands on a tripod in the centre of a circular room, rotating and projecting images from old film rolls onto walls painted with phosphorescent paint. The past is projected into the present as an ephemeral image which fades from view like a fleeting memory.

Persistence of Vision 18 June – 30 August 2010
How does memory influence what we see? What part does technology play in shaping both how we see and what we remember? Informed by scientific research and inspired by historical developments in media technology, FACT presents a new exhibition exploring the relationship between vision, memory and media.

Persistence of Vision brings together the multimedia work of eight contemporary artists that repurpose image technologies, such as cameras, slide projectors, magnifying glasses and mirrors, to playfully review and re-imagine how our memories are stored and revived.

Train your brain in FACT’s Exploratory Laboratory
18 June – 30 August 2010
FACT, Liverpool and online
FREE Entry
As part of its new exhibition Persistence of Vision (18 June – 30 August), FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) is inviting audiences to test their memory, visual perception and mental agility in its Exploratory Laboratory.

Visitors to will enter the Family-Friendly space through a hall of mirrors. Inside they will find a series of fun experiments that test various aspects of memory and perception. The interactive touch-screen games, which were specially designed by the FACT team for the exhibition in collaboration with Liverpool University’s Visual Perception Lab, give visitors an overall score so they can see how their memory and mental agility measures up against family, friends and other gallery visitors. The games are also available to play online via the FACT website.

Visitors will also have the chance to step back in time and see a rare display of Victorian optical toys. The collection, which belongs to acclaimed experimental film-maker Werner Nekes, includes zoetropes, thaumatropes and a camera obscura. These devices fascinated Victorians with their ability to capture images and create the illusion of movement. They were also crucial to the development of more recent image technologies such as photography and film.

After exploring the Laboratory, visitors can then go on to the main gallery spaces to see Persistence of Vision. FACT’s new exhibition explores the relationship between vision, memory and media through the multimedia work of nine contemporary artists who repurpose image technologies, such as cameras, projectors, magnifying glasses and mirrors, to review and re-imagine how our memories are stored, created and revived.

Participating artists: Melik Ohanian (France), Julius von Bismarck (Germany), Julien Maire (France), Mizuki Watanabe (Japan), Gebhard Sengmüller (Austria), Jamie Allen (Canada), Sascha Pohflepp (Germany), AVPD (Denmark), Lindsay Seers (UK)
