FACT - MyWar – Identity and Appropriation under War Condition
12 March – 30 May 2010
In a period of global unrest, FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) presents a timely exhibition. MyWar explores conflict in a digitally networked world through the work of 12 international artists. Their work investigates the realities and myths of war at a time when the boundaries between the public and the private are being steadily eroded.
What does war mean to you?
From 13 March to 30 May 2010, FACT is presenting an exhibition called MyWar – a radically personal look at conflict through the work of 12 international artists. Their artwork investigates identity, participation and the reality of conflict in a digitally networked world.
YourWar
To tie in with the exhibition, FACT is working on a project called YourWar to engage local people in the debate and create an audio-visual collection of stories relating to modern conflict.
People can feel distanced and de-sensitised by media coverage of modern war. Through working with Iraq, Afghanistan and Falklands War veterans for the War Veteran Vehicle project last year, FACT discovered there is a lack of understanding and opportunities to talk about modern conflict. Veterans can feel marginalised, and the public disconnected.
FACT is looking for people to come share their thoughts, feelings and experiences of this highly emotive issue. They can be anyone – young or old, general public, or ex-service, people who have no experience of war, and those that do but haven’t had an opportunity to share it.
The project will be located in FACT’s Media Lounge space and online. The public will be able to come in and record their stories as audio files or scroll through and listen to the stories we collect.
People will also have the opportunity to engage in the debate by texting, Twittering and emailing in their thoughts.
How to get involved/find out more:
• A facilitated recording session with our Engagement team on Saturday, 06 March between noon and 3.00pm in The Box at FACT. There will also be further recording opportunities throughout the exhibition run (dates and times TBC)
• Send your thoughts and comments via email: mywar@fact.co.uk, SMS: send MyWar + message to 60777 (UK only) or Twitter: #MyWar
• Read what others are saying on the MyWar website: http://mywar.fact.co.uk/
• Go to the FACT blog and read posts by FACT’s resident MyWar blogger
• Throughout the exhibition, come to FACT’s Media Lounge and listen to the stories of others, or record your story right there and then.

Just realised that the Space Invaders exhibition at FACT ends this Sunday – 21 February 2010 and I’ve hardly explored most of it properly.
Space Invaders: Art and the Computer Game Environment
18 December 2009 – 21 February 2010
at FACT
Part of a season of gaming at FACT, Space Invaders: Art and the Computer Game Environment is a group exhibition exploring the increasingly blurred boundaries between videogame spaces and real spaces. From the detailed, complex worlds of Grand Theft Auto to zen gaming and augmented reality, the exhibition brings together world renowned new media artists and innovative games designers who are pushing the limits of the medium.
Interesting opp for a local blogger – not me, too busy and conflict is not my thing.
FACT is looking for a resident blogger to contribute to our next exhibition
The MyWar exhibition takes a personal look at war in the digital age through the work of 12 international artists. Their artwork investigates the reality of conflict at a time when digital networking has changed the way we receive and respond to information.
We are looking for an individual who can provide a good insight into day-to-day news during the exhibition about war and the politics surrounding war. Perhaps you’re a writer, or an academic, or just someone with a keen interest and understanding of the issues.
We’re looking for 2-3 articles a week, which will be presented on the FACT website and disseminated to a wider audience across our social media presence. If you’d be interested in contributing but to a lesser extent, you can still get in touch and we’ll look at sharing the contributions amongst people.
If you’re interested or would like to find out more, contact: Omar Kholeif

The screening will take place at FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) on Friday 29 January from 1 – 4pm, featuring highlights of the film shot by Alexandre Promio in 1897, introduced by Dr Richard Koeck from the University of Liverpool.

Cosplayers c. Cao Fei
Liverpool artwork of the week 2010-1. ‘Cosplayers’ (2004) video by Cao Fei in ‘Space Invaders: Art and the Computer Game Environment’ at FACT, 18 December 2009 to 21 February 2010.
I had not heard of COSPlay before seeing this video at FACT. You can read more about it on Cao Fei’s website. In some ways its quite sad but I enjoyed the video and thought it would be cool to see a few of these characters acting out their fantasies around the streets of Liverpool. Actually in recent years we have been following the exploits of Mothman portrayed by local artist Tony Knox.
Cao Fei, one of China’s most acclaimed young artists, presents film installation COSplayers (2004). COSPlay, short for ‘Costume Play’ captures this growing trend in Asian countries of bringing virtual battles to life. Set in the artist’s hometown of Guangzhou, the video follows a group of teenagers who act out an elaborate drama dressed in martial arts from their favourite computer games and animations.
