DaDaFest 2009 ends on Saturday 5 December so if you haven’t seen the exhibitions yet you need to be quick.

Upstairs at the Bluecoat there is Sally Booth.

Recipient of the Adam Reynolds Memorial bursary, Sally Booth was artist in residence at the Bluecoat earlier this year, supported by Shape and Tate Liverpool. She returns with a series of photographic light-boxes inspired by the changing light and shadows of the beautiful oval windows in her studio.

At Open Eye there is Kevin Connolly’s ‘The Rolling Exhibition’

Kevin Connolly, a photographer who has no legs and uses a skateboard for transportation, has photographed people’s reaction to him across 15 countries and 31 cities. He has captured what he calls the “universal stare”; the imperfect moment of that glance is intriguingly and imaginatively recorded in this collection.

The Rolling Exhibition reprises the exhibition of the same name that was showcased by DaDaFest 08, incorporating four new photographs that were taken during his stay in Liverpool last year.

And at CUC there is ‘Resistance’ by Liz Crow

Resistance‘ showcases a brand new installation from Liz Crow. It features a national touring, moving image installation exploring Aktion-T4, the Nazi, mass-murder programme that led to the death of a quarter of a million disable people.

Through the story of Elise, a woman who showed courage in the face of horror, we bear witness to one of the truly imperfect moments of the last century. Read More

Challenging a neglected part of our history whilst raising critical questions for today, Resistance is a disturbing, sometimes chilling work of art.

DaDaFest 09 launched at the Contemporary Urban Centre on Tuesday. Its the 9th festival and has become such an established part of the Liverpool arts calendar its hard to imagine the year without it but Liverpool is actually one of only very few places to hold a festival of Disability and Deaf arts. Great credit to Ruth Gould and the rest of the DaDa team as well as Liverpool City Council, Arts Council NW and other funders for their continued support.

The festival runs until 5 December 2009 with lots of events at various venues but after the launch at CUC we viewed the new work by Liz Crow in the ground floor gallery. ‘Resistance: Which way the Future‘ is a powerful and moving series of videos starting with a dramatisation based on Aktion-T4, the Nazi mass-murder programme that led to the death of quarter of a million disabled people. We then move onto another screen for a video of some of the actors who took part talking about the issues and how it felt to take part.

This is a touring exhibition which will soon be going to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.

Arts Prize Saves Work of Disabled Sculptor

The work of a disabled sculptor who died in August will be saved thanks to a prestigious arts award.

Adam Reynolds will be posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at this Thursday’s DaDaAwards ceremony

Sculptor Adam died in August 2005, aged just 45. The award will not only recognise the significant contribution that he made to disability arts in the UK, but the £500 prize money will save one of his sculptures from being lost forever. The cash will enable the sculpture to be moved from its present home in Birmingham to Devon, where its future will be secure. Adam’s long-time friend Laurie Peake of Liverpool’s Biennial arts festival will accept the award on his behalf.

The DaDaAwards, which take place at the Crowne Plaza in Liverpool, are held as part of the deaf and disability arts festival, DaDaFest. The festival, which is now in its fifth year, is co-ordinated by North West Disability Arts Forum (NWDAF), and funded by the Liverpool Culture Company, Arts Council England and the Granada Foundation.

The ceremony will be hosted by Anne Cunningham and Natalie Markham from comedy group, the Nasty Girls, who will be joined by fellow comic Laurence Clark. Musical entertainment will be provided by singer Minika Green, who is set to perform a blues and jazz influenced set.

Ruth Gould, creative director at NWDAF, said: “The fact that the North West has so many deaf and disabled artists worthy of recognition is a credit to the strength of the region’s arts scene.

“Over the past five years we have seen DaDaFest develop into a major festival, attracting visitors from across the UK and beyond, and I look forward to continuing to build on this success as we approach European Capital of Culture in 2008.”

DaDaFest runs until December 3 2005 at venues across Merseyside.

DaDaFest Starts

A musical based on the Thalidomide controversy will open this year’s deaf and disability arts festival in Liverpool.

The show takes an uncompromising – and humorous – look at the drug, charting its use from the 1950s to the present day. Written and composed by Mat Fraser, and staring Kate Winslet’s sister, Anna, it arrives in Liverpool mid-way through a nationwide tour.

It’s just one of the events taking place as part of DaDaFest, which is co-ordinated by North West Disability Arts Forum (NWDAF), and funded by the Liverpool Culture Company, Arts Council England and the Granada Foundation.

The ground-breaking festival celebrates in fifth anniversary this year, with a varied programme that aims to bring deaf and disability art to the forefront of the region’s cultural scene.

DaDaFest 5 features a huge range of events and activities, ranging from a deaf culture celebration which offers discounted admission to non-sign language users, to a family fun day at Sefton Park Palm House. NWDAF will also be holding a series of workshops at their office on Bridport Street, allowing participants to sample activities including digital photography and creative writing.

The festival runs from November 24 to December 3 2005 at venues across Merseyside. Full listings follow below. For more information, visit the North West Disability Arts Forum’s website: www.nwdaf.co.uk.
