I enjoyed the exhibition of political comic artworks ‘Ctrl.Alt.Shift Unmasks Corruption’ at the Contemporary Urban Centre. The artists show great drawing skill along with some interesting narrative.

Also picked up a copy of the book which accompanies the touring show at a bargain £3. (You can buy it online for £4.99)

Eyewash Exhibition at CUC

eyewash-5

Penelope Teapot, installation and friends

“Eyewash Exhibition”
3 – 14 February 2010 at Contemporary Urban Centre (ground floor)

A group exhibition of work by emerging and established Liverpool based artists, showing together for the first time.

I like this. Several artists I have not seen before, except Debbie Ryan of course. Its new and fresh (like eyewash?) and a bit edgy, a bit dark, a bit playful. Curated by UAW-CAT (a real person  not a trade union) whose own work is placed well above head height – ‘Art for very tall people’ apparently and is accompanied by strange noises from the adjacent cupboard.

Penelope Teapot’s knitted things are clever and cute, Michael Hollywood’s paintings seem to tell a frighteningly dramatic story and Craig Robson’s skilfully drawn T shirt designs are the stuff of fantasy/sci-fi.

All good. Who are these people? Where have they been hiding? I want to see more, its only here for 2 weeks, take a look.

Artists: Craig Sinclair, Craig Robson, Clare Chinnery, Penelope Teapot, Lauren ‘Dusty’ Devin, Robi Morris, Frances Masey-O’Neill, Michael Hollywood, Debbie Ryan, UAW CAT

WE WANT YOU TO BE INVOLVED!

Too long the word on the grapevine has been one of not enough work or recognition for Fringe theatre in Liverpool, well, here is an event that we hope will rectify that. But it will only work if you get in involved…

Directors
We are currently seeking one or two directors to assist in the delivery of the EIGHT plays. Your chance to show the city of Liverpool what you can do! Email your current CV to info@writenowfestival.co.uk to contact Write Now if you’d like an introduction to participating writes.

Bring along a handful of CVs and headshots (actors only) it’s your chance to promote yourself. We will be casting the must see event on the Liverpool Arts calendar 2010 from attendees of this event. If, however, you’re unable to make the ‘Meet’ Market, all remaining roles will be listed after the event on a page on the Write Now website, immediately following the event.

Volunteer Programme

Volunteers are crucial to the success of Write Now. They are the first point of contact for audiences; they help generate an atmosphere needed during the Festival period.

Alternatively visit the website – www.writenowfestival.co.uk – you can download the Volunteer Application document.

There will also be a chance to talk to the Write Now Team at the ‘Meet’ Market, so, if you prefer, you can bring the application with you.

Chris Von Steiner at CUC

c. Chris Von Steiner

c. Chris Von Steiner

You still have time to see this excellent exhibition of digital paintings by Chris Von Steiner. It shares the large 3rd floor gallery with Laurie Lipton’s “Extraordinary Drawings” so you get to see two great shows in one visit.

I’m amazed that Chris creates these using just the computer mouse – not the stylus and tablet that most digital artists prefer. He tends to create series of paintings which perhaps tell a story – The Snow King being a good example is reminiscent of Narnia and are my favourites. Others include familiar pop imagery and icons in bold colours, some mildly gruesome or fetishistic scenes – some very colourful dreams (or nightmares) are portrayed. Lovely. ‘Salvage’ at Contemporary Urban Centre

Storm Tide c. Tony David Roberts

Storm Tide c. Tony David Roberts

Owl c. Tony David Roberts

Owl c. Tony David Roberts

These bas-relief paintings are well worth close inspection, the artist has cleverly constructed pieces that show the inspiration of the coasts and hills of his native Wales. There are some excellent drawings too.

Salvage: An Exhibition by Tony Roberts
at C.U.C. (Ground floor gallery)
10 December 2009 – 17 January 2010

Salvage is an  exhibition of bas-relief painting. The majority of this creative work has been produced utilizing discarded books, paper & card.  Flintshire artist Tony says this style came about after observing how companies discard printed material as if not valuing the research and work put into producing them.

Tony’s work has been described as a cross between sculpture & painting and reminiscent of ceramics.

All books used in his art work have been the “vision and inspiration of someone”, and are now given a “new dimension in a different format” where people can explore their previous purpose and meaning.
