Liverpool Biennial – City States: Jerusalem at CUC

via ArtSchool Palestine.

One of the several City States exhibitions at the Contemporary Urban Centre during the Biennial.

Future Movements
City States: Jerusalem
(City States is a strand of the 2010 Liverpool Biennial’s international exhibition)

Future Movements draws inspiration from the city of Jerusalem and its changing urban structure.  The exhibition takes the viewer to places outside the spiritual Old City to locations that, despite their importance in shaping the contemporary metropolis, have rarely been referenced or addressed in literature and the visual arts.  The exhibition exposes Jerusalem as a contemporary city in all its physical, social, economic and political complexities – demonstrating how the urban space is divided, conquered, abandoned and re-occupied.

Liverpool Biennial 2010 and CUC – CityStates Details

There’s going to be a heck of a lot of art in the Contemporary Urban Centre this Biennial. Lovely, that’s where our office is too!

Liverpool Biennial 2010 – CityStates
18 September to 28 November 2010
Contemporary Urban Centre, Liverpool

A major new collaboration for Liverpool Biennial 2010 presents a series of international exhibitions exploring the cultural dynamics between cities and states

It is often cities that excite artists rather than ‘nations’, but any contemplation of cities also involves considering the state. Today more than 50% of the world’s population lives in cities, and predictions show this will grow to 70% by 2030. Global migration has given rise to a dual allegiance shared between the city we live and work in and the place or nationality of our birth, culture or ancestry. Without doubt the state of cities increasingly determines the future of states.

CityStates is a cluster of international exhibitions, initiated and supported by embassies, foreign governments, international agencies or galleries, exploring the cultural dynamics between cities and states. A new partnership between Liverpool Biennial and the Contemporary Urban Centre has secured a unified, central space for these exhibitions, which in past editions of the Biennial have been spread across the city.  CityStates will be exhibited in converted 19th century warehouses in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle.

Soft Folds, Hard Edges at CUC

Geoff p 02 8-1

Soft Folds, Hard Edges – An exhibition of new works by Geoff Parr
Article © Gayna Rose Madder

New work by artist Geoff Parr is currently exhibited at Novas Contemporary Urban Centre until 22nd August.

Geoff P 04.jpg 8These highly unusual pieces give the impression of a fabric base, yet on close inspection are constructed from a wide and sometimes seemingly incompatible range of materials, constructed of stuffing, hand stitching and canvas painted using household paints, oils and acrylics. ‘Time Out’  has called his work ‘Post-Punk Pop’.

The title of the exhibition arises from the contrast between the initial image projected by the work, and the actuality of its construction. Geoff describes himself as ‘part sculptor, part painter, part fashion-designer,’.

Geoff has been working on this collection of paintings for the last three years, and wanted to exhibit them in his home town of Liverpool, showing the development of his ideas over a period of time.

For instance, one of his favourite pieces at the moment is ‘Morecambe Bay’. Geoff says: “I thought about Morecambe as it would have appeared at different times of the day, and about the architecture and clothing which around the time of its heyday.”

His work is created through a series of destructive acts, e.g. cutting, pouring and stitching paintings.

Tattoo Art Exhibition at CUC

tattwhoo-1

A nice exhibition by various artists who not only create designs for tattoos but produce some other fine graphics. Curator UAW CAT has put together a show that is both interesting and entertaining. I enjoyed the projection of images, mostly taken from http://ugliesttattoos.com where you can see some seriously bad tattoos.

Artists include Mark B, Craig Sinclair, Craig Robson, UAW CAT, Dan Banas and Sween.

Tattwhoo: An exhibition of contemporary tattoo design
at CUC
3 – 27 June 2010
The exhibition is presented by UAW CAT in association with Liverpool Tattoo Convention 2010. Showcasing a collection of work (not just tattoos!) by tattoo artists and studios from across the globe alongside that of other graphic designers and artists who also see the body as a canvas.

We also want you, yes YOU, to Get Your Tatts Out!:
Bring photos of your best ink down to the gallery for our giant body art collage (and make a donation to charity). Or if you’re not very good with your camera we can take one for you there and then.
