The new series of the excellent ‘In Conversation’ series run by Club Geek Chic kicked off at Liverpool Cathedral on Thursday evening with radio presenter Janice Long talking to Dave Monks of Radio Merseyside.

During the evening we heard Janice’s interesting life story in radio and TV with musical interludes from Ian McNabb, China Crisis, Ragz and Ian Prowse. There was a Q and A at the end too.

A relaxing and entertaining evening, we look forward to the next in the series which features Mike McCartney on Friday April 23rd.

Mike will talk about his brief stint as a ladies hairdresser, his time as ‘Mike McGear’ in The Scaffold and the whole Merseybeat era with John Gorman and Roger McGough and his photography, from snapping Little Richard’s back in the Cavern to The Beatles on tour to his amazing, spontaneous backstage shots at Live8 in 2005.

Impropriety at Kazimier

This was our first visit to the Kazimier venue in Wolstenholme Sq. It’s a strange place, a sort of theatre in the round with dark decor and about 200 people crammed in at various levels. There have been a few weird and wonderful events there over the past couple of years but we missed them.

Saturday 30 January 2010 was a launch event for Impropriety the improvised performance people. They perform at Mello Mello on Slater St. every other Thursday and also run workshops there on Wednesdays. This was great entertainment and very funny, I haven’t laughed so much for ages.

I’m sure you know the score – the audience are asked for suggestions and the group of actors have to improvise sketches based on them. They split into teams so there’s a competitive element, they are set tasks such as telling a story without using the letter ’s’ or facing each other without laughing or telling the stories as musicals. It all moves along at great pace and nobody really cares who wins.

There is also information on the Culturepool website as they helped promote this event.

So look out for their future performances, well worth the admission fee.

Stephen Fry’s Socks

twestival-6

Forgot to mention that one of the highlights of the auction at tonight’s twestival was two pairs of (worn) socks signed and donated by Stephen Fry (yes, him off the telly and also an obsessive tweeter). Can’t remember how much they fetched, think it was £30

Liverpool Twestival Success

twestival-1

Had a very good night at the first Liverpool Twestival (twitter festival). Leaf Cafe was packed again, some excellent music from Sparkwood & 21 and 6ix Toys. The Lapis were due to play after we left.

Mandy Phillips and others did a fantastic job to get the whole thing orgasnised in a very short space of time.

The auction and raffle seemed to go pretty well with Don McAllister doing the shouting. Our donated Holga camera went for a bargain £35.

I’ve no idea what the figures are I’m sure a lot of money has been raised for Charity:Water not just from this event but the 180+ others taking place all over the world tonight.

Transition at the International

doug-king-smith.jpgAnother blink-and-you-miss-it exhibition at the International finished today. We managed to catch it on Saturday and it was a good one.

Meet Me at Sunset – Ullet Grange

sunset-4.jpgA couple of excellent live performances last weekend as part of the Meet Me at Sunset exhibition at the Grange in Ullet Road. A really nice exhibition too.

Joanne Ashbridge, a recent JMU Dance / Physical Theatre graduate, performed her ‘Life, Death and Everything In Between’ which started with putting an orange into a microwave and ended with her splashing red wine all over herself.
Nagachoo from Japan performed “Link between ordinary and extraordinary”/ “The Chair”, a lively mix of dance, saxophone playing and sawing one leg off a chair whilst balancing on it.

Jane Edden – Colony & An Oscillation of Caz Wellers

jane-edden-100.jpgThis installation was at 11 Wolstenholme Sq. briefly last week. Its a shame if you missed it, it was delightful. On the ground floor Edden projected footage of birds alighting on telephone wires onto the gallery wall, from which she extends real wires or ropes to create a facsimile of the original scene. Along the wires, she places cards to function like film screens, momentarily catching the transient flock as they glimmer in and out of space and time.

Crossing Point – Wendy Dison

wendy-dison-100.jpgAnother very well attended viewing at Blackburne House this week as Wendy Dison’s exhibition ‘Crossing Place‘ was opened by Cairán Byrne, 1st Secretary at the Irish Embassy in London, and Roger Phillips of BBC Radio Merseyside.
