Prevent closure of National Museums Liverpool’s museums and galleries

Petition to Prevent closure of National Museums Liverpool’s museums and galleries.

In case I haven’t mentioned this already.

“Liverpool museums are under threat because of central government cuts. National Museums Liverpool is being forced to consider closure of some of your museums. Please sign this petition to help prevent closure of your museums. We will present all the signatures from this to central government in the UK in October this year.

We value National Museums Liverpool and urge government to do all in its power to maintain adequate funding for our museums.”

Have Your Clothes Turned Into Art!

Kaarina-e-versionsml

My clothes are already art of course, some are installations that have taken many years to perfect.

Donate a piece of your clothing to become part of an artwork to be exhibited at this year’s Liverpool Biennial festival!

Finnish artist Kaarina Kaikkonen is making an artwork for FACT’s Biennial exhibition which runs from 18 September – 28 November. As part of this exhibition she plans to create a huge sculpture made up of entirely of clothing donated from Merseyside residents. In particular we require light-weight tops, such as vests, t-shirts, blouses and shirts from men, women and children.

Each year Liverpool Biennial has a theme. This year’s is Touched. At FACT, the theme is translated into the idea of “a mother’s touch”. Kaarina’s sculpture will reflect on the maternal act of doing the laundry, which can be understood as a basic symbol of healing, care, and unconditional love.

If you can, please post a piece of clothing (just something you might send to a charity shop anyway) before 07 September. Alternatively you can bring your items in to the FACT building (88 Wood Street, Liverpool, L1 4DQ) and leave them at our Information Desk in the foyer. Please label the clothing with your name, postcode and supply an email address so we can keep you updated and send a formal invitation to the exhibition.

Unfortunately we cannot refund costs of postage or return clothing. We hope you understand. However, we will be listing the names of all those who kindly donated next to the artwork which will be on display throughout the 10 weeks of the exhibition. All items will be donated to Oxfam following the show.

If you need more information, don’t hesitate to get back to us and ask – you can reach Ellie Overs at ellie.overs@fact.co.uk or 0151 707 4410.

The Six Rooms Gallery – Any Umbrellas?

6-Rooms-image-DJ2

Liverpool Independents Biennial:
The Six Rooms Gallery
Admission free
14 September – 28 November 2010
Supporting Birkenhead Youth Club

The Six Rooms Gallery is a temporary exhibition space which was set up with the intention of extending the 6th Liverpool Biennial across the water to Wirral, as part of the Independents sector.

The idea of exhibiting away from Liverpool, came through monthly networking meetings for visual creative people based in Wirral.  One of the many topics raised during the discussions was the lack of exhibition space in the area. After much searching and negotiations, a temporary lease was secured for 26 Argyle Street, Birkenhead, next door to the busy Capitol restaurant.

With a combination of  established and new, emerging artists and designers, the group will celebrate the notion of bringing new art, craft, design and architecture  together in one space, exploring the ways in which the artists are able to respond to the Biennial’s theme of ‘Touched’, in their own personal way.

The exhibitions aim to connect with the public by having artists on hand to talk about their own work, and free workshops will be run during the exhibition period.

As there are over 30 artists exhibiting in the space, the exhibitions are split into 3 groups, with a private view for each and a guest local celebrity will open each one.

In Group 1, Artist Daniel James wants to show the dichotomy of love, using umbrellas as a metaphor for the protection love gives and takes.
At the Six Rooms Gallery, he intends to comment on Paul McCartney’s  lyrics ‘Can’t buy me love’,  using a floating sky of umbrellas. James believes love should never be a commodity and can never be bought. The artist is asking members of the public to bring along their umbrellas to form part of the exhibition. It does not matter about the condition as ‘love’ is not perfect. He only requests that a label is attached, expressing an experience of love ( be it good or bad) The left umbrellas will then be made into sculptures exhibited within the Six Rooms Gallery courtyard. Above the courtyard will be the floating sky of umbrellas forming the image of love.
Exhibition Dates:

•    Group 1:  14th September – 5th October 2010 ( Guest tbc)
•    Group 2:   8th October -31st October 2010 ( Opened by Ian Jackson, Director of Art in Liverpool )
•    Group 3:   4th November – 28th November 2010 ( Frank Field to open)

Liverpool Discovers – A New Winter’s Trail

liverpool-discovers

Liverpool set to discover its greatest stories never told

What do the original red telephone box, a Wimbledon champion, a goal net and an x-ray machine have in common? It may sound like cryptic crossword clue, but believe it or not, all four can call Liverpool home (five if you include the very first crossword). And that’s just the beginning…

With a wealth of triumphs, discoveries and innovations, the City of Liverpool has decided to blow its own trumpet and embark on a landmark public art event to uncover and document the wealth of internationally significant, yet lesser-known facts about its incredible history, driven and informed by the people who know it best.

Liverpool Discovers, commissioned by Liverpool City Council, will see the city reveal its greatest stories never told, before a Winter’s Trail of fun and informative art installations created by exceptional artists and a brand-new Liverpool map link together the city’s points of international interest in early 2011.

Liverpool’s natural and humorous storytellers are being asked to unlock this treasure trove of hidden secrets by telling the world what they know via the Liverpool Discovers leaflet, available online at culture.org.uk and from various city centre outlets and cultural buildings (listed below). Once received, the facts will be verified by a panel of historians, with the most interesting stories inspiring the installations and map.  A fleet of 8 customised pedal -powered ‘Artmobiles’ will also take visitors around selected parts of the trail.

The 10 categories included for consultation are: Arts and Entertainment, Health, Science and Technology, Sports, Trade and Commerce, Architecture and Open Spaces, Transport, Maritime, Social Justice/Radicals and Music.  The consultation will run from 16th August until 20th September . The online form is available now at www.culture.org.uk, with printed leaflets ready and in the outlets named below by Friday 20 August.

The award-winning Wild in Art have been commissioned to bring the region to life once again this winter and have devised this innovative and exciting event as the key part of the seasons programme of cultural events, entitled  A Winter’s Trail. They are working in partnership with Liverpool Lantern Company on the artistic programme and Open Culture on the consultation programme, with further collaboration planned with the city’s cultural sector to form part of Liverpool’s impressive cultural offer.

Sally-Ann Wilkinson, Director of Wild in Art said: “We’re incredibly excited about Liverpool Discovers. This is Liverpool people’s chance to shout about what they find most interesting and what makes them proud about their city. We want people to have a lot of fun with us by sharing their stories, as well as enjoying the trail early next year.”

Councillor Wendy Simon, the city’s cabinet member for Culture and Tourism, said: “I can’t wait to hear and read some of the entries. Liverpool is a city packed with so many wonderful people and fantastic storytellers  that every day I hear something amazing that I hadn’t heard before. This project is an opportunity to share stories, uncover new tales and find out more facts about what makes Liverpool the wonderful place it is. I can’t wait to discover even more about our city.”

The event will also be generously supported by the Liverpool ECHO, BBC Radio Merseyside and  Merseytravel, with further partnerships to be announced soon.
