Liverpool’s museum: the first 150 years

John Millard recently retired from work at World Museum Liverpool, but before he left he wrote a history of the museum.

You can download the complete 140 page book for free from the World Museum site, under ‘history of the museum’ – www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/wml/history.

2010 is the 150th anniversary of the launch of the museum and library building on William Brown Street and so the history is called ‘Liverpool’s museum: the first 150 years‘ .

I’m not sure when I will find time to read it (maybe when I retire (for the 2nd time) myself) but it looks fascinating.

Letterpool Book is Launched

This is a beautifully designed book by Switch Media. Like all good coffee table books you can dip into it at any time to admire some of the photographs. It’s also more proof that so often the simple ideas are the best. It is, after all, just photographs of lettering around the streets of Liverpool but well presented first of all on a simple clean website and now in this heavyweight book it’s real eye candy.

Of course, many of the old signs are beautifully crafted ornate pieces, then there was a period when all print looked as if it had come from the same typewriter but all that changed with the digital era and we are so much more typography-aware these days. It is also fun to try and recognise the locations of the signs before reading the brief description. There are interviews with some of the photographers too.

Vic Reeves at the Bluecoat

Vic Reeves Vast Book of World Knowledge

Vic Reeves’ Vast Book of World Knowledge

Vic Reeves was at the Bluecoat last Friday night talking to Tim Clare about his new book Vic Reeves Vast Book of World Knowledge.

He was very funny of course, discussing such things as his tweed suit (and underpants!), the museum he had in his house which included the shovel that was used to load coal into the boiler of the Titanic. But mostly showing some of the images from the book and explaining their meaning.

He is very keen to stress his artwork, he is an artist of course and he obviously enjoys spending a lot of time drawing and painting.

So we bought a signed copy of the book – it really is vast!

Liverpool The Great City. Book by Paul McMullin

Halsgrove Publishing: Liverpool The Great City, Liverpool, 9781841149493.

Liverpool The Great City showcases the resurgence of the port as a tourist, leisure, shopping and educational place. Visitors to the city arrive curious about the birthplace of the Mersey Sound, the home of the Beatles, the old staging post to the New World, the arrival port for wartime Atlantic convoys, to see the city that boasts two important cathedrals or two top-flight soccer teams – a wide variety of reasons. They invariably depart surprised by the breadth and beauty of the city architecture, the magnificent waterfront skyline and, more recently, the quality of the shopping.

Liverpool The Great City provides an overview of the city, a treasured keepsake, a wonderful present for a family member or perhaps those who no longer live in the area and are curious to see how it is changing. The images are brand new, some deliberately taken just days before the book went to press. A small selection, however, are echoes of the past and show the Albert Dock before it was refurbished to become one of the most visited attractions in the whole of the UK. All are presented in a large format hardback that does justice to both the quality and importance of the photographs and of the city itself.

Paul McMullin is a commercial architectural photographer born, raised and based in Liverpool. His work has taken him all over the world on a variety of projects in the Far and Middle East, Africa and America. He is driven by the pursuit of perfection in all his photography and has spent many months, seeking the quality of light that defines his award-winning style. This involved many early dawns, late nights and hours waiting for the light and clouds to be just right.

Mike McNamee is the editor of the photography magazine, Professional Imagemaker and began collaborating with Paul McMullin on features concerned with architectural and panoramic images. He lives and works on the Wirral, in New Brighton, and so has the best view of the Liverpool Waterfront on a daily basis. He has thus been following the emergence of the city and its skyline for more than 50 years.

Art Book – Anthony Pendlebury Paintings

anthony-pendlebury-book

Artist Nathan Pendlebury has produced a lovely book about his father’s work (which is also very good, in fact we own one). You can see a few of the pages and purchase the book on the blurb website.

About the book…

A look at the painting of Anthony Pendlebury, featuring a massive 111 of Anthony’s paintings over 120 pages (all in colour). This is an extensive look at the paintings of the artist and his intensive career to date ranging from 2003 to 2008. The book is a retrospective of what Anthony Pendlebury has done so far with his art.

Anthony recently suffered a severe stroke (in December 2008), and whilst Anthony recovers his son has taken the opportunity to look back at the work Anthony has produced so far.
