Are you a top Screever?

A celebration of the noble art of Screeving!
Organised by UrbanCanvas and supported by Open Culture and Liverpool Culture Company, The Bold Street Trader's Association and The Scottie Press, as part of The Liverpool Irish Festival and The Big Draw.

The 1st open Pavement Art Competition in celebration of the life and times of the Liverpool born Victorian pavement artist James William Carling (1857-1887).
The competition is open to all Merseyside based artists and offers the opportunity to showcase your works and talents on the street as part of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations. This is open to both professional and amateur artists living or working in Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral, St.Helens and Halton.

In keeping with the work of James William Carling the competition will be a ‘traditional’ Italian Street Painting competition involving chalks/pastels ‘screeved’ directly onto the pavement; exactly as James would have done it (paper would have been an expensive commodity to a poor Victorian artist!)

The competition will take place in Liverpool’s Bold Street (Rope Walks Square outside FACT) between 10am and 5pm on Saturday 18th October 2008. If the weather is bad the event will be postponed until the following day- Sunday 19th October. The competition is FREE to enter although pitches will be extremely limited so places cannot be guaranteed.

There are three main prizes.
The prestigious hand engraved James William Carling Trophy for overall ability and talent
The Adrian Henri Street Art Award for originality and the Peoples Pavement Art Award as voted for by members of the public.

Out of the Galleries:

This theme of 'Out of the Galleries' for this 1st competition looking for artists to re-interpret works in the National Museums and Galleries collections here on Merseyside. These are classical works that may have been familiar to the young James Carling. Not looking for exact copies but rather the reworking of familiar pieces. The way you do this is up to you but you will be judged upon originality and technical ability.

Works will be judged by a mixture of arts professionals and local celebrities and award presentations will take place on the day at The Carling Gallery above Maggie Mays Café on Bold Street

The closing date for entries: Thursday 4th October 2008
