Artwork of the Day - Paul Nash

nash.jpg

Liverpool artwork of the day - Monday May 21 2007. 'Landscape of the Moon's last phase' 1943/44 Paul Nash (1889 - 1946) - Oil on canvas at Walker Art Gallery

This is a view of Wittenham Clumps in Berkshire. It features regularly in Nash's late mystical landscapes which follow in the English Romantic tradition of Palmer and Blake.

The Sun, Moon and the changing seasons became personal symbols of life and death. The place itself, the site of ancient earthworks, evokes humankind's primitive past.
