‘Exchange’: Public Art in Liverpool with sculptor Rob Riley

Thursday March 22
18.00 - 20.00

A discussion about public art in Liverpool, how modern commissions mirror the classic sculptural semiotics, and what influence these factors have on their absorption in the city.
Rob Riley, sculptor involved in the placing of some of Liverpool’s most famous public works, will take us on a verbal “tour from Lime Street to Tate Liverpool, discussing public sculpture and how it interacts with Liverpool’s urban landscape.
Public sculpture in Liverpool has a proud history of gestures to the bold, the brave and the spirit of the city. However, over time they seem to fade, dull - their moment in the spotlight being substituted for the status of more recent landmarks or new places and spaces to meet.
How do we interact with art in the public realm? Is the importance of place disregarded, as in the example of the 'Superlambanana', that seems to 'graze' where it sees fit around the city; or is the symbolism of place embraced, as in Tracey Emin's placing of her work at the Anglican Cathedral?
This is an event organised by postgraduate students taking part in the Postgraduate Module in Contemporary Curating at Tate Liverpool. Participants are asked to complete the tour prior to the event. It takes around 25 minutes to complete, goes form Lime Street Station and ends at Tate Liverpool (see route instructions below). Refreshments will be served throughout the evening.
