THE BLUECOAT OPENS NEW SILKSCREEN STUDIO

Liverpool’s creative hub, the Bluecoat, opens a new silkscreen studio from Monday 1 March.

With a 40 year history of printmaking on-site, the Bluecoat has a wealth of experience in the art of print – adding to its rich heritage as a creative hub which engages people in the process of creating art.

In addition to producing prints and posters, the new silkscreen beds can be used to customise t-shirts, bags and cushion covers and will be used to decorate the aprons worn by staff in the Upstairs bistro at the Bluecoat.

Comprising two rooms, three silkscreen beds and an exposure cabinet, the studio can be hired by up to three users at a time.

Led by Print Studio Manager, Emma Gregory, the existing intaglio print studio has held a successful programme of workshops and courses for all abilities, from seasoned professionals to experimental amateurs, spawning the group of locally based printmakers, ‘Liverpool Illustrators.’

Bryan Biggs, Artistic Director at the Bluecoat said: “Printmaking has been a regular activity at the Bluecoat since 1968. Hundreds of people have learnt skills, mainly in etching, many of them as beginners, and the quality of prints produced has been outstanding. We are very excited to have a new screen printing facility, which will broaden our printmaking offer and enable even more people – professional artists as well as aspiring artists – to try their hand at one of the most satisfying art processes.”

The equipment for the studio is on loan from Liverpool John Moores University and has been funded with a grant from PH Holt Foundation.
