Here’s some bright, warm paintings to cheer us up on these cold, dark Winter days, this solo show by Wirral-based Grahame Ashcroft fills a large room at the Williamson Gallery. Well worth a visit, it’ll bring a smile to your face and wipe Birkenhead’s gloomy skies from your mind.
The artist describes his working process:
Truman Capote said, My life as an artist, at least can be charted as precisely as a fever: the highs and lows, the very definite cycles. I know what he meant. Inspiration comes and goes – interests germinate and blossom, fade and die away, only to be replaced by fresh blooms – but the compulsion to work remains fairly constant. Sometimes, I feel as though Im on a treadmill; at other times, the paintings seem to paint themselves. I never know when a paintings finished. No bells ring. I simply realise Ive begun thinking about the next one.

ARTISTS BOOK FAIR – call for participation
Liverpool’s ‘I am your barber’ project is hosting an artists’ book fair from the 16th to the 18th of December.
Exhibitions, music, and performances from the city’s finest undercover talent will celebrate D.I.Y. alternative art. The event will be held in the Casa de Brujas gallery on Duke Street, run by local independent artists.
We are inviting like-minded sorts from far and wide to join us and share work in a space which reflects our commitment to all things revolutionary and experimental. The book fair will be open for two days over the five day event, with continuous live performances from our favourite musicians, and food and drinks stalls. We want to create an inviting and colourful environment to welcome members of the local community, artists and otherwise, to explore the exhibitions and see the alternative side of the city’s art scene.
We are looking for small print and grass roots publications to exhibit and sell wares. We will be hiring out tables for £15 (one day) £20 (two days) to artists who would like to participate. the fee will include a table and chairs, as well as tea and coffee!
Tables will need to be booked by the 14th of December and paid in full.

The Penny Readings 2009
Sunday 6th December 2009, 7pm at St George’s Hall
The sixth annual Penny Readings, hosted by The Reader Organisation will take place at 7pm on Sunday 6th December in the Small Concert Room in Liverpool’s magnificent St. George’s Hall.
“A wonderful start to Christmas – like mulled wine for the soul”
This year, the Penny Readings will feature readings by Liverpool’s award-winning author and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce.
In Dickens’ time public readings were the equivalent of a big music gig today – think Beyoncé at the Echo Arena – Dickens was a hot ticket! For the past six years, the Penny Readings has continued the tradition that Charles Dickens began in the 1840s, when he would travel around Liverpool reading to thousands of ordinary people and charging just one penny.
Previous years have included readings from actor and director Janet Suzman, actor Annabelle Dowler and poet Janet Joseph. The 2009 line-up is still under wraps (announcements coming soon), but it can be guaranteed that the fantastic live-readings will be combined with the usual exciting array of music and dance. All this and a good measure of festive cheer, still available at the rock-bottom price of one penny!
The ever-popular readings have repeatedly sold out well-short of demand in previous years, so those wishing to attend are advised to get their tickets early to avoid disappointment.
Twenty tickets will be released on eBay on Friday 27th November, for those really keen to come and willing to bid away!

Liverpool artwork of the week 2009-47. ‘Splashy’ Go-Penguin by Julie Dodd for artinliverpool.com. Hope Street, Liverpool. 22 November 2009 – 10 January 2010.
When the go-penguins were first announced artinliverpool.com held a competition for artists to submit designs for our own special go-penguin. The competition was won by Julie Dodd and the penguin is now happily situated on Hope Street at the top of Mount Street. This is an ideal place for us as it is very close to our home, its outsdie the former Liverpool Art College and up the road from LIPA which was my old school (when it was the Institute Grammar School).

Splashy the Penguin
The artist has focused her design upon the art in Liverpool. The city has a strong, diverse artistic presence and Liverpool is lucky to have many outlets for its art to be seen and enjoyed, with its galleries, museum, public art and community art. Splashy represents a celebration of Liverpool art with its differently shaped and coloured splashes. But what do the colours mean to you? Colours are associated with emotion, memories, places and can help to set a mood. The splashes have been designed to resemble real splashes but with more a powerful visual impact and each splash has been painted onto the penguin to produce a strong, fun image.
Julie graduated this year from Wirral Metropolitan College witha first class honours degree in fine art. Her work is generally based upon repetition and she develops ideas so they grow into something else, often creating multiples of a design to mimic life, growth, regeneration etc. www.juliedodd.co.uk

The Bluecoat Hub was buzzing yesterday with the sound of red hot knitting needles as NICE09 and Purlesque joined forces to present a weekend of Nordic Knitting. The trees in the garden were covered in knitted decorations whilst inside Karl Geleff Christiansen from the Faroe Islands encouraged anyone and everyone to add a few stitches to the huge orbital knitted piece he is creating. I don’t know what the finished work will look like but it will certainly be heavy.
The event continues today (Sunday 29 November 2009 13-16.00)

Wow. St. George’s Hall was totally packed out yesterday for the big Winter Arts Market. There were 80 stalls and thousands of visitors so it took us a while to get around.
Lots of lovely goods including quite a few stalls we had not seen in Liverpool before. They all seemed quite happy with the day so hopefully this will become an annual event though I’m guessing the organisers Open Culture must have incurred some costs.
There was music, food and drink too and it seems a lot of local people who still had not seen the inside of this great building before.
