Slow Magic and Real Magic at the Bluecoat

magic-at-the-bluecoat

Had a quick look round the Slow Magic exhibition at the Bluecoat on Thursday, looks really good, we’ll have to go back soon. There’s a talk by one of the artists, Vincent Falsetta, at noon tomorrow (Saturday 1 August 2009) which should be interesting. There’s more talks and activities in the weeks ahead.

At the Private View there was a real Magician, I didn’t catch his name but he was amazing. I think he’ll be there every day for an hour in the afternoon.

Eco Design Show and Fashion Lab. Application Deadlines Extended

Eco Design Show & Fashion Lab – Application Deadlines Extended

Designers operating in the fields of fashion or eco design are being offered an opportunity to showcase their work at two exhibitions as part of the Liverpool Design Festival.

The Fashion Lab and the Eco Design Show will run from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November at the Crypt Hall of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. The deadline for entries for both events has now been extended by two weeks to 14th August 2009 to give more designers the chance to take part.

The Eco Design Show will focus on environmentally friendly design and crafts including interior products, ceramics, furniture, lighting and jewellery whilst the Fashion Lab will also prioritise designers with a particular focus on environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. The Lab will provide a unique opportunity to buy contemporary fashion and accessory design directly from emerging new designers and spot up and coming trends.

Design Initiative said: “Both the Fashion Lab and the Eco Design Show have attracted widespread interest and we have had some exciting entries. Following a number of requests, we have agreed to extend the deadline to give people more time to submit their entries.

This is a great opportunity for up and coming designers to put their work on display to a wider audience at minimal cost. It will also give the wider public the chance to see some of the new developments in the fields of fashion and environmentally friendly design.”

For further information see www.liverpooldesignfestival.com and for enquiries related to the Eco Design Show contact Frank Collins on 0161 834 3722 or enquiries about the Fashion Lab contact Julie Colligan on 0151 709 1566

Music on the Waterfront – This Weekend

Jonathan Raisin - 'The Rightful Owners of the Song'

Jonathan Raisin - 'The Rightful Owners of the Song'

Rehearsals appeared to be going well this afternoon for this evening’s performance of ‘The Rightful Owners of the Song‘ which you may recall was one of the 2008 Capital of Culture commissions. Its being repeated in a two hour concert tonight at the Pier Head as part of this weekend’s Music on the Waterfront. In August there’ll be Art on the Waterfront then Film on the Waterfront in September.

Liverpool’s Pier Head is being transformed into a massive outdoor concert venue this weekend.
The city’s iconic World Heritage Site is to host the first in a trilogy of FREE cultural festivals – called On The Waterfront – beginning on Friday, July 31 2009

The music festival begins with a reprisal of the Capital of Culture smash-hit concert – the Rightful Owners of The Song, which stars the city’s best pub singers performing classic popular songs by greats from Sinatra and Elvis to Ella Fitzgerald, accompanied by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. The two-hour concert begins at 7.45pm.

On Saturday 1 August, from 5.30pm-10pm, the venue will be awash with the sounds of Africa thanks to one of Liverpool’s best loved festivals. Africa Oyé will be showcasing the very best of its festival favourites with top of the bill superstar, Oumou Sangaré of Mali, ‘Groupe Lolou’ from Senegal and the ‘Hohodza Band’ from Zimbabwe who reside in exile in Blackpool.

The musical extravaganza reaches a climax the following day with a classic Lazy Sunday Afternoon, from 1pm-5pm, featuring some of Liverpool’s finest Latin, Blues and Funk players and visiting international artists. Star acts include The Grapes Band, the seven piece funk monster band – 6ix Toys, Lightnin’ Willie and the Poor Boys and Connie Lush – widely regarded as one of the finest blues singers the UK has ever produced, having been voted Best UK Female Vocalist by readers of Blues In Britain for 5 separate years.

Throughout Sunday afternoon there will also be Samba performances at the south side of the Pier Head by Liverpool Carnival Company, and music and dance from young performance groups working with Brouhaha International.

In total more than 200 musicians and performers, from 9 countries will take to the stage for more than 12 hours of free music.

Fab Collective Photography Exhibition at St Lukes

fab-st-lukes-2

I don’t want to show any of the pictures from the exhibition yet (you have a month to see them up close yourself) but here’s one mystery solved. As you know I’m sure, St Lukes is the ‘bombed-out church’, there’s no roof, the walls are too fragile to screw into and the floor is a meadow / garden. So how do you put on an exhibition of photographs for a month?

Fab Collective is a group of local photographers who got to know each other through flickr and then started to meet in person earlier this year. As so often happens the collective energy led to events being organised and they’ve been out on the streets shooting pictures of people and places and uploading them to their collective website www.fabcollective.com

Now they have a month-long exhibition, opening tonight (Fri 31 July 2009 18-20.00) where you can see one large photo by each of 26 photographers plus a couple of montages by the group.

Each photo is linked to a quote about Liverpool – the combination of some great quotes with great pictures is wonderful and leaves a lasting impression on the mind.

All the photographers love to take pictures of Liverpool and its people so I’m sure you will have seen a lot of their work in various publications, websites etc. but probably not these particular shots.

How’s it done? They’re all printed on weatherproof boards which are attached to metal battens which are hung from the window bars. Its all very neatly done and has already been quite well tested by recent weather so will, hopefully, last for the month at least.
