Roy Castle’s Vision of Hell

All sounds a bit anarchic to me. No bad thing, the art scene needs a good dose of craziness now and then.

The Emperor and the Tiger – Friday 1 Aug 2008

The Emperor and the Tiger: 1st August, 9pm, FREE Event in Newsham Park

A spectacular open-air performance featuring a crew and cast of more than 150 is set to grace one of Liverpool’s original Victorian Parks.

The Emperor and the Tiger is a large-scale outdoor theatre show created by internationally acclaimed outdoor theatre specialists Walk the Plank and carnival arts organisation Kinetika. The performance at Newsham Park on 1st August will open Liverpool’s Carnival Weekend and is the opening event of the Imagine festival (1st to 10th August), which are both part of the programme for European Capital of Culture 2008.

This magical firework folk story features a magnificent mechanical tiger who graces a 100m long stage, a statuesque emperor, colourful carnival dancers, and fabulous firework effects.

The tale is inspired by a traditional Bengali folktale – the greedy emperor is demanding his taxes, and the people must pay! An original soundtrack and magical special effects animate the tale of the Emperor, and the Wise Man who persuades him to change his ways with a little help from the Tiger.

More than 50 local community dancers from Liverpool have been rehearsing with Choreographer Jeanefer Jean Charles from Kinetika to master the art of carnival dance.

Liz Pugh, Producer from Walk the Plank and Director of the show, said: “We’ve been working with local performers to give the people of Liverpool a fantastic opportunity to be part of the Capital of Culture celebrations. It’s set to be a great evening of free family entertainment.”

International dance groups from all over the world will take part in a prelude to the show. The acts can also be seen in the Liverpool International Carnival procession the following day (2nd August) along with another daytime outing of the Emperor and the Tiger.

The 12th Man Exhibition at Central Library

12th-man-460.jpg

‘The 12th Man’
By Tabitha Jussa

at The Picton Reading Room, Central Library, Wm Brown Street.
1 August to 31 August 2008
Viewing Thursday 31 July 2008 18-20.00

A photographic exploration into what it means to be a football supporter in Liverpool, following the passionate supporters of Everton and Liverpool Football clubs.

This is a project of the people, for the people. It is a celebration of the strength of belief, loyalty and passion for which Evertonians and Liverpudlians are renowned for.

The photographs will capture all aspects of the community; the spiritual beliefs, hopes and loyalties of these unique football supporters, highlighting the immovable faith that comes from the fans – the12th men and women of each team.

‘The 12th Man’ aims to acknowledge the unconditional love fans have for their team and the sport. Football brings people together during hard times and great times and provides a common thread for the people of the city regardless of where their loyalties lie.

‘The 12th Man’ is all encompassing regardless of age, race or gender. The only criteria is that all participants support their team to the end.

This is an ongoing, long term project.

The exhibition taking place at the Picton reading room will sit alongside memorabilia from the Everton Collection. An extensive private collection, of which, a small selection of items will be on display to the general public for the first time. This offers a fascinating insight into, not
only Everton’s history but to the game of football in general.
