An early start to the evening activities yesterday as we attended a fashion event at Natasha Hamilton’s new bar / restaurant called H on Victoria Street.
We get invited to a few of these sort of things but don’t often bother unless there’s artwork involved. However this one mentioned models in lingerie and, more seriously, fundraising for the Field of Women breast cancer charity and free Wokka vodka.
Do people actually wear this stuff? Just looks silly to me. The place itself has a black and white theme, the upstairs bar is black with minimal lighting so you can’t read the menu or see the extra step at the top of the stairs. Didn’t see the downstairs restaurant properly but that’s the white (or cream) bit.

Then onto the launch of ICE07 at the Post & Echo building. This is the Festival of Icelandic arts and culture which is in Liverpool until Sunday. I have already listed the events on the blog, please try and get to see some of it. There’s some really nice art & design stuff here in the Echo building and we’re going to see the photographic exhibition at the Albert Dock today.
After calling in at View Two for the opening of The AlTurnertive Turner Prize (good stuff) we went to Barfly and stayed out late to watch the 3 Icelandic acts: SvenBit, Sometime and Bloodgroup.
SvenBit opened with his fairly minimal techno electrics. Sometime are more techno-pop, very lively and danceable, a great shame there weren’t more people there to join in the fun.
Then headlining were Bloodgroup who also use electrics, synths etc. rather than guitars but still sound quite rock n roll. A really good night, maybe the fact that it clashed with the start of Liverpool music Week depleted the attendance.

Part of the ‘Seeing the Landscape’ exhibition of paintings and drawings by artists Stephen Cain and Iain Yell that seeks to depict different aspects of the landscape, with both artists bringing a distinct contrast of styles when approaching the themes and subject matter of their work.
Stephen Cain presents a series of landscape drawings that explore solitude, serenity and themes of vast open spaces that keep themselves company.
Iain Yell’s paintings reference the urban environment using geometric form, colour and a contrast of marks and surfaces found within the landscape in order to construct his work.

Just found this on the Art Newspaper website.
What a fantastic idea, hope it happens.
Tate Liverpool has commissioned the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei to make an ambitious installation for the Liverpool Biennial, opening next September. This will span the width of the historic former dockyard where the gallery is located. The engineering firm Arup is currently conducting a feasibility study for Web of Light which will be concluded by the end of this month.
The work will consist of illuminated crystalline strands suspended from steel cables which stretch across the Albert Dock. A spider made out of crystals will hang in the corner nearest to Tate; the entire installation will weigh over eight tonnes. The gallery will need to raise around £400,000 to realise the work.
Ai Weiwei has already made an installation for Tate Liverpool included in the exhibition “The Real Thing: Contemporary Art from China

Not such an extraordinary journey for us, we just went to the Cornerstone gallery via the Linda McCartney Centre and the Roald Dahl Centre at Royal Liverpool Hospital.
You may recall one of Barbara Jones’s ‘Micro-scope Particles’ prints featured as our artwork of the day when the exhibition at the two RLH centres opened last month.
Its a shame its not easier to get a proper look at the Linda McCartney centre, there’s too many obstacles pushed in front of the pictures.
The Roald Dahl centre is better, we’ve visited it a few times just to see the artwork. Professor Toh who runs the place is a great believer in the positive effects of art so you can see a few interesting artworks as well as Barbara’s prints which are monochrome here.
Officially this exhibition ends on November 30 2007 but I suspect the pictures will be there for a while longer.
An Extraordinary Journey
In this year of heritage, An Extraordinary Journey is an opportunity to acknowledge significant Merseyside innovations in health and social care that have improved people’s lives, not only here but throughout the world.
An Extraordinary Journey will highlight this important aspect of Liverpool’s past, raise awareness of current innovators and inspire aspirations about living and working in a healthy Liverpool.
Kitty Wilkinson, pioneer of public washhouses; Evan Thomas, a founder of the speciality of orthopaedics; and Thomas Fresh, the first Environmental Health Officer are amongst the many responsible for Merseyside’s impressive record of new ideas in health care, as well as innovative projects promoting well-being in the community.
