Powerplant-460.jpg

Got my tickets, they’re FREE!

Powerplant – FACT, The Box 05 June 2007 19.00 FREE

Bringing together some of the UK’s most dynamic young artists, Powerplant explores hi-octane percussion-led music with an electronic sound and strong visual performance.

Led by percussionist Joby Burgess, the performance will include Steve Reich’s hypnotic Electric Counterpoint, re-worked for the Xylosynth and Lannis Xenakis’s tour de force Rebonds B, as well as new music by the group.

Powerplant’s set of Kraftwerk classiscs, arranged by Joby and composer Ben Foster features the innovative and award winning Elysian Quartet, in a heady mix of live-sampling, lush strings and a little 80’s chic.

The evening will begin with a Q+A session with the artists, followed by the performance.

Tickets are FREE and available from the Information Desk and The FACT Shop in the foyer.
NB: Tickets are limited and therefore subject to availability. Contact (0151) 707 4450 for details.

Artwork of the Day – Chris Millichamp

millichamp.jpgLiverpool artwork of the day – Thursday May 31 2007. ‘Bluecoat’ by Chris Millichamp, sold by www.liverpoolgallery.com

A bit of a cheat as this original watercolour of the Bluecoat has been sold so it may not be in Liverpool now. There’s several other similar works by the talented local painter though available from liverpoolgallery.com and they have an open evening at their venue in the Albert Dock colonnades this evening, they’ll be open until 21.00.

This picture made me realise just how much I miss this view of the front of Bluecoat Arts Centre, can’t wait for it to re-open early next year.

The exhibition is now in full swing and it’ll be a good chance to get together, (any excuse for a glass of wine). There are several new pieces exhibited in the gallery and also displaying some poetry.

Also at the Albert Dock this evening there will be an Exhibition of work by Liverpool John Moore’s University students in ‘Site’ and several other Units, and a preview evening at No.8 The Colonnades for an exhibition called ‘Lines of Investigation’. Everyone’s welcome and it should be a lovely evening around the Dock.

For more information call Anita on 07804 061 855 or email anita@liverpoolgallery.com
The Exhibition at No.15 The Colonnades by Liverpoolgallery.com artists runs until 29th June 2007

Streetwaves – Girl Power Required

Girl power required

THE LIVERPOOL Culture Company has extended its search for the city’s hottest new musical talent.

And it’s hoped that the extra time will give more female singers and musicians a chance to get their entries in.

The deadline for this year’s Streetwaves competition was originally set for June 1, but organisers have decided to give up-and-coming local musicians another week to apply.

Alicia Smith, Streetwaves Project Manager, said: “We’ve received a great response to Streetwaves 2007, but we’d really like a more representative mix of applicants.

“We’re not trying to put men off – we’d obviously like as many people as possible to apply – but it would be great to see some local female bands and solo artists getting involved.”

Anyone aged 14 to 25 can take part, you just need to visit liverpool08.com and download and complete an application form before the new deadline of June 7.

http://www.liverpool08.com/streetwaves/

Now in its third year, Streetwaves 2007 will include outdoor heats in each of Liverpool’s five neighbourhoods (Alt Valley, Liverpool East, City and North, Liverpool South, and South Central). The ‘most ready’ talent from each heat will win an impressive package, including the chance to perform live on the special Streetwaves stage at this year’s Mathew Street Music Festival.

Celebrate on 20/08 – Again

Celebrate on 20/08

artinliverpool.com will be taking part again of course (see last years report and here), we’ll announce more details in the future.
(when we come up with an idea of what to do)

The Liverpool Culture Company is asking local organisations and businesses to help celebrate the city’s European Capital of Culture status.

Each year on August 20 – 20/08 – groups across the region are encouraged to celebrate Liverpool’s 08 success by making an ‘offer’ for the day. An offer can take the form of free or discounted entrance, or a special event or promotion.

Last year 20/08 day included hundreds of offers. People were given the chance to sample a huge selection of activities – from free lessons in rock climbing to taking an exclusive behind the scenes tour of a brewery, free CD loans from local libraries to discounted dining in city centre restaurants.

August 20 will also mark the 2nd birthday of the 08 Place – Liverpool’s one stop culture shop. The Whitechapel store opened its doors for the first time on 20/08 day in 2005.

It’s really easy for groups, businesses, or organisations to get involved in 20/08, they just need to visit www.liverpool08.com and complete the special 20/08 form. All offers will appear on the website and in a 20/08 day brochure, which is distributed to venues across the city.

The deadline for offers is Friday, July 22 2007.

Shoot Liverpool – All Photos now Online

water-street.jpg

This is the picture that won the prize donated by ourselves (Tickets to Liverpool’s Cunard Yanks, thanks to Souled Out Films) in the Shoot Liverpool event last Saturday.

The answer to the clue that the teams were given was ‘Water Street’ and this was one of many inventive solutions.

All the 300+ photographs taken on the day are now on the Shoot Experience website, do take a look, there’s some great pictures of parts of Liverpool. As you may guess the theme is ‘Water’

A gallery of selected photos will take place at:

Building an intricate patch work of visual/aural quilts that speak subtly and sublimely to the journey of life: of grieving and loss, of happiness and sadness, as well as the joyful and reverent gestures of living.

Layers, An exhibition by Margaretha Schöning

marg.jpgLayers, An exhibition by Margaretha Schöning.

Written by Tony Knox (Edited by Gaynor Evelyn Sweeney)

‘Layers’, an exhibition by Margaretha Schöning at the Wishbone Gallery.
This small cultural space, in Orrell Arts Centre, can be found by the distinct sculpture of a roosters head on the outside of the building.

Schöning, a German born artist based in Liverpool (England), has produced a collection of mixed media pieces from 2006 to 2007. They are abstract compositions of objects encased in layers of translucent white wax. Red ink sandwiched between the sheet of glass and the wax introduces a further layer.

On some images, the red ink on still retains the fluidity and others sets forming organic abstractions. Each piece is formed by grades of media, interconnected by the two dimensional plane. In one, there is a hand written letter with some of the text readable, as if submerged and encapsulated in time, preserved by the wax.

The work poses a curiosity through the abstractions of objects and composition. Each piece draws the viewer to analyse the layers and interpret the objects immersed.

Schöning is an established artist in her independent practice and co-founded basement with Susan Leask in Liverpool, England. She is one of the principle members of the Eight Days a Week Cultural Exchange and recently completed an Artist in Residence Programme in Peru, South America.

‘Layers’ by Schöning runs from 14 May 2007 to 28 June 2007 at the Wishbone Gallery.
