Artwork of the Day – Colin Serjent

serjent-saviour.jpgLiverpool artwork of the day – Wednesday February 28 2007. ‘Saviour’ Photography by Colin Serjent – Red-Dot

In abstract mood today – can’t get my head round the fact that February has been and gone in the blink of an eye.

We don’t see a lot of abstract photography especially here in Liverpool where people are falling over each other to portray the lovely architecture or the grimy cityscapes or the lovely/grimy people.

So thankfully we have Colin Serjent who’s been exhibiting his photography regularly for years. He currently has a piece in the Overview 07 exhibition at Cornerstone.
These are not digital manipulations, they are the real thing. This looks like a close up of a tree trunk but you can never be sure what they are – just naturally created interesting colours, shapes, textures.

Serjent is also a co-director (along with Sue Milburn) of Red Dot Exhibitions. They have organised many exhibitions in this area and plan to hold a visual arts festival in June, so look out for that.

08 Youth Advisory Group – Get Involved

A VIBRANT group of young people is recruiting members to express their thoughts on Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations for 2008.

The Liverpool Culture Company’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) was formed almost a year ago and is now giving new young people a chance to get involved. Members currently advise on major cultural plans, have hosted fringe events at party political conferences, helping at a 2012 Roadshow with an Olympic theme, plus much more.

Liverpool City Council’s Leader, Cllr Warren Bradley, said: “The success of the YAG in the relatively short time it’s been running is testament to the hard work of both the young people and the Culture Company. It’s so important to recognise the opinions and views of young people as they will reap the rewards of the legacy of what we are doing culturally.

Defcon Launch Gig at Magnet – Sunday

A nice peaceful gig at Magnet on Sunday Mar 4 to (re)launch Defcon mag. and because they are our friends they’ll be offering half-price tickets if you mention ArtinLiverpool (limited to 2 per group)

Liverpool’s out of control satirical magazine DEFCON is out on the streets again next week. But not before it offends the 70’s chic of the city’s Magnet venue this Sunday evening for a gala night of surprise and atmospherics.

New York’s masters of spectral folk WHITE MAGIC will be headlining the event. Headed by the beautiful voice and subtle songwriting textures of Mira Billotte, the band are currently touring around Europe spreading their Gnostic intrigue and unreason. The band are one of the newer acts on the Chicago Drag City Label, an organisation who can boast to releasing some of America’s finest independent music. Bonnie Prince Billy and Joanna Newsom are proof of their adroit musical perception. White Magic will piece together up your shattered souls.

Truculent electronic wizard ANIGMAN will show a different side to his musical persona on the evening by treating us to a set of soaring ambience. Running through the special wires and atomic chaos of his weird machines will be sounds only his head has known up until now.

Biltone play with guitars, violins and double basses to create a sound of classical simplicity. This three piece have been playing shows in the North West for a couple of years now, gaining an enthusiastic following and treating audiences to the more serene muses and philosophies of life.
