From Louise Wood...
I'm looking for some assistance with an art project I want to undertake for the Liverpool Biennial(Independents).
I'm an artist, making predominantly ceramic sculptures, inspired by the relationship between people and the buildings they occupy. As my art work is concerned with buildings and our memories associated with them, I intend to make a piece which responds to a cross section of the publics memories, about buildings now gone from the Liverpool landscape.
I'm looking for help from people who have strong ties with, or live in the city of Liverpool; for anyone who has a story involving a Liverpool building which has been demolished as part of the redevelopment. I'm looking for anyone who has fond recollections, or strong memories of a Liverpool building, no longer in existence; and would be willing to tell me their story. Or any individual who feels there is a building worthy of redevelopment which has been overlooked. Perhaps a building was special to them because they met their partner there, worked there, brought up their family there, or got married there. The buildings do not have to be of any great historical or architectural merit, although they might be, I'm more interested in peoples personal connections with buildings.
If you feel you could help me with the above, please contact me on:
mailto:artlou@tiscali.co.uk
Many Thanks,
Louise Wood

Liverpool Biennial 2006 at FACT
The fourth Liverpool Biennial, the UK’s largest contemporary and visual arts event, begins on the 16 September and runs until 26 November.
As part of the festival FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) will showcase new commissions that invite visitors to scratch and sniff Liverpool, bridge the gap between the city and Mumbai, explore the architecture and characters of the city and enjoy the work of the Godfather of Thai cinema.
Making full use of the galleries, cinemas and even exterior walls of FACT, internationally acclaimed artists Shilpa Gupta (India), Kelly Mark (Canada), Matthew Buckingham (USA), Sissel Tolaas (Norway), Anu Pennanen (Finland), Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand) make FACT a ‘must see’ destination for visitors to this year’s Biennial – expected to exceed the 350 thousand who came to Liverpool’s last Biennial in 2004
“There is only one truly major work in this biennial (2004). Yang Fudong's magnificent, multi-screen video installation at FACT is a tour de force. Adrian Searle, The Guardian, 2004
This year, sit amongst the waves and enjoy Obscure Moorings, a new film by Matthew Buckingham, filmed entirely on Liverpool’s docks and featuring local extras. Get a whiff of Liverpool by sampling Norwegian artist Sissel Tolaas’ sensory, scentual installation OUTSIDEIN. Travel virtually as Shilpa Gupta creates an interactive piece bridging Liverpool and Mumbai. Luxuriate in the rich imagery of Faith, an ambitious new film installation from the acclaimed Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Dip into Kelly Mark’s Liverpool A-Z for a guided tour of the city through its colourful inhabitants and experience A Day in the Office, Anu Pennanen’s window on the working life of Liverpool and the architecture that influences our everyday lives.
FACT’s experimental and adventurous film programme SEEN, will also pick up on the Liverpool Biennial’s International 06 themes of transformation and progress, featuring work by emerging and internationally renowned artists such as Anri Sala, Richard T Walker, Jonas Mekas and Semi Conductor.

Dear Independents,
Thanks for all the comms. Some have minimal content, others jpgs, urls and various attachments, which can make it hard to see the wood for the trees.

Liverpool Biennial 2006: Taiwanese artist requests textiles and memories from the people of Liverpool
Local Liverpool residents are invited by artist Lee Mingwei to search their homes for items of textiles that have been treasured and kept. He also wants them to share the memories associated with them in order to create a new artwork for Liverpool Biennial’s International 06 exhibition. The work will be shown at Tate Liverpool 16 September to 26 November.
Lee Mingwei’s Fabric of Memory reveals how objects can capture personal memories and histories. The project focuses on clothing and other fabric items owned by Liverpool residents; items made for them in childhood by parents, grandparents, other relatives or persons close to them.
Local residents are requested to write down all they remember about the items of clothing - who made them, when and how they were used and any other memories and associations they evoke. If possible, they are also encouraged to contact the original makers of the items and solicit their memories of the making and giving the item.
Potential lenders are asked in the first instance to send an image or images of the item(s) they wish to submit, along with their brief thoughts to the above questions to biennial@tate.org.uk
The installation at Tate Liverpool will include approximately 20 items. Others will be represented on the project’s web-based component that will continue to grow as submissions are added throughout the course of the exhibition. Many of Lee’s works exist as situations in which participants explore issues of trust, intimacy and self-awareness. In Fabric of Memory, the lent items will be placed in individual boxes, with each object accompanied by its two documented histories. The viewer is invited to open each box, share in its memories and recall their own.
All items will be returned at the close of the exhibition.

Daydream
An invitation to be on the silver screen
We would like to invite you to be in a major film for Liverpool entitled Daydream. We are Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, an artist/filmmakers group known as Desperate Optimists www.desperateoptimists.com
The film is a large-scale community film about Liverpool and will explore ideas and feelings of a city in transition. The cast will almost entirely be made up of local communities and people involved in the 80 Days Around the City projects and we would like as many of these people as possible to be in the film. The film will be 30mins in length and will be filmed in 5 key locations in the city including St George’s Hall. We would like to invite you and your group/organisation to participate in the filming in St George’s Hall.
The filming will take place at St Georges Hall on Saturday 15 July, from 1pm – 6.00pm. You should arrive by 1pm at the latest. The scene involves an audience watching a rock band perform a song in the (newly renovated and spectacular) Concert Hall.
All participants must be over 18 years of age and, on arrival, will be asked to sign a release form.
We are sure the day will be fun and participants will be able to see up close how a 35mm film is shot. All participants will be invited to the launch of the film as part of ‘Made In Liverpool’ in October at Cineworld on Edge Lane and have their own personal copy of the film on DVD. In addition, the film will be shown in different areas of Liverpool during the Liverpool Biennial.
A buffet lunch and cold drinks will be served.
If you would like to be in the film please RSVP to helen@biennial.com
or call 0151 709 7444.
Parking will not be available at St George’s Hall.
Daydream is a film that has been commissioned for Made in Liverpool 06 by Liverpool Biennial and Liverpool Culture Company.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Going Native
Mercy will be curating a month-long exhibition and series of performance events for the Liverpool Biennial 2006. This will be an important expansion on the )BracketTHIS( project. Since its inception, the project has developed into an on going investigation into the complexities of cultural identity.
The forthcoming exhibition aims to explore the ways in which people of different cultural backgrounds relate to their current location. Artists from throughout the North West are being asked to think about identity, location and belonging.
Artwork produced in a variety of disciplines - painting, photography, sculpture, new media and installation – will be displayed.
"Is the place we identify with a physical or a mental site?"
“Do individual history’s reflect communal experience?
"Is it possible to define somebody by the place they have left, or by their current home?"
“Aren’t we always 'Going Native'?
Mercy
The 'Going Native?' project is curated by Tomas Harold and Nathan Jones of the Mercy organisation.
Mercy is a print, events and exhibitions based arts organisation that specialises in providing platforms for local artists, on a national level.
