MEET BEN JOHNSON
Book and print signing at the Walker Art Gallery
Ben Johnson is signing copies of the book Cityscape – Ben Johnson’s Liverpool and prints of his astonishing painting The Liverpool Cityscape at the Walker Art Gallery from 1100-1300 hours on Friday 23 May 2008.
Visitors to the signing session will also enjoy a sneak-preview of the exhibition Ben Johnson’s Liverpool Cityscape 2008 and the World Panorama Series a day ahead of the official opening as the event takes place on gallery.
Cityscape Ben Johnson’s Liverpool, written and edited by the Walker Art Gallery’s curator of fine art, Ann Bukantas, explores the creation of The Liverpool Cityscape. The fully-illustrated book includes a free poster of the painting, an introduction by the internationally-renowned architect Sir Norman Foster and a biographical essay on the artist by Jonathan Glancey of The Guardian.
The book features a fascinating section on the history of Liverpool cityscapes, including an illustration of the earliest known view of the city. It also includes a narrative of how the painting was created from commission to completion and an interview with Ben about his working practice, The Liverpool Cityscape and his feelings about the city and the project.
The exhibition Ben Johnson’s Liverpool Cityscape 2008 and the World Panorama Series runs from 24 May to 2 November 2008 and displays all of Ben’s cityscapes together for the first time. The Liverpool Cityscape is joined by panoramas of Zürich, Jerusalem and Hong Kong and paintings representing Chicago and Paris.
The book Cityscape – Ben Johnson’s Liverpool retails at £10 and the poster-print £7.
The Liverpool Cityscape is a lasting legacy of Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture year and will move to a permanent home in the Museum of Liverpool when it opens in 2010/11. The monumental painting was commissioned by National Museums Liverpool, with the Liverpool Culture Company and Professor Phil Redmond CBE and Mrs Alexis Redmond.
