Call for proposals: Ashton Old Baths, TMBC

Deadline: Sunday 27 September 2015. Paid.

TMBC invites proposals for artwork, to be sited on the glazing of the new “pod” within entrance area and internal ground floor of Ashton Old Baths. The artwork needs to reflect both the building’s heritage, as a late 19th century municipal swimming baths and its transformation into a cutting edge digital media start-up incubator.

The artwork needs to both connect with the community of the borough and go some way to tell the building’s unique story to date. The artworks narrative should be dynamic, innovative, original and most of all engaging; successfully tying together both incarnations of this iconic building.

THE PROJECT – Ashton Old Baths Background
The Corporation Baths at the Henry Square end of Stamford Street, Ashton under Lyne were opened in 1870 at a cost of £16,000. It was one of the first and largest municipal swimming baths in the country. Since its closure in 1970, when it was replaced by the baths on Water Street, the building had remained vacant until its recent redevelopment.

The Old Baths on Henry Square is being transformed to house incubation units for ‘state-of-the-art digital start-up units’ for new technology and digital firms. The project has been made possible through the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund.

The repurposing of the iconic municipal baths into a high tech digital media incubator will enable us, to use the borough’s heritage to drive forward its future prosperity. The new multi-purpose building will provide a hub for a wide variety of new media, digital and creative enterprises in Tameside.

The creation of this incubator is essential for the long term viability and sustainability of the building, moving a previously vacant Grade II* listed building forward into an exciting new creative era.

The artwork needs to be installed on completion of the development’s “phase 1” building works in December 2015.
