Liverpool artwork of the week No. 11. ‘Sin Eater’ by Hew Locke for the ‘Now Then’ exhibition at the Bluecoat, Liverpool March 15 to May 4 2008
Sin Eater is an alternative coat of arms for 21st Century Liverpool that interweaves a host of symbolic and recognisable icons with imagery from different cultures.
Like the official coat of arms, Sin Eater features Neptune, God of the sea, and the Latin inscription which translates as ‘God has given us this leisure’.
The piece is made from black cord glued to the white wall with long strings of black beads hanging giving the effect of an old frayed tapestry.
