Liverpool artwork of the week 34. ‘Dreamer’ by Claire Burbridge, Overall Winner of the National Sculpture Prize at Bluecoat Display Centre, Hanover St, Liverpool 9 August to 13 September 2008
The winner of this first National Sculpture Prize was announced in Liverpool last Friday. This small but beautiful work was chosen by the judges. The People’s Choice award went to Seamus Moran for his ‘Synaptic Ammonite Torso’.
‘Dreamer’, a kind of lost wax casting in resin, was made from studying movement expressed in just one limb, in this case the arm. The scale of this sculpture is carefully considered: making a human figure much smaller than life gives it an otherworldly feel.
The six short listed artists are Claire Burbridge, Olivia Ferrier, Peter Lewis, Naomi Matthews, Seamus Moran and Rebecca Wilson. There’s a complementary show include work by Stephen Bird, Ian Gregory, Peter Hayes, Regina Heinz, Merete Rasmussen and Antonia Salmon.
Do take a look before the show ends, this is the last at the Hanover Street space though the main Centre continues, of course, at the Bluecoat in School Lane / College Lane.
