Artistic Excellence and Participation for 2008

Press Statement
Monday, 18 June 2007

Liverpool’s major arts organisations today reaffirmed their commitment to delivering a programme of artistic excellence, participation and engagement, for Liverpool and the UK, for European Capital of Culture 2008.

In a joint statement the Bluecoat, FACT, Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Tate Liverpool and Unity Theatre said:

“The richness and diversity of what we are committed to presenting in 2008 is firmly rooted in our city, yet is international in its reach, scope and ambition.

We do not underestimate this golden opportunity to present the very best of ourselves to our city, the nation and the world. At the heart of our artistic programmes is excellence, made by, and with artists of international repute and rising stars, those based in our community and from across the globe.

We are proud to be playing our part in the year-long celebration that is Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008. Our creative collaboration with our other partners in the city, supported by our funders and sponsors, means that there will be something for everyone and experiences to be had on every level.

Our commitment to ensuring that as many people as possible have the opportunity to participate and engage in what we offer is core to how we present our artistic programmes, now, in 2008 and beyond. We are reaching out, widening access to the arts, engaging and exciting the people who live here in our city, first and foremost, offering innovative and inclusive participation programmes that involve young people and adults of all ages and from many communities.

Liverpool is the UK’s nomination for European Capital of Culture and even more than now, will be a cultural destination for the world in 2008. All stakeholders in 2008 – artists, audiences, communities, media, businesses, funders and politicians – should take pride in what has been achieved so far, whilst recognising that we are still on the journey to realise the achievement of all our ambitions.
