Chris Phillips has taken photos for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service for 11 years and a selection of his images taken at fire scenes has been put together for a special display for Capital of Culture Year. The photos are accompanied by poetry that has been written by Syd Webster, who was a serving firefighter for 30 years and is now a School Fire Liaison Officer. Syd was awarded the MBE in the 2000 New Year’s Honours List for “Fire Education with Children”.

The display is now going on tour – stopping off at a fire station in each of the five districts of Merseyside.

Syd said: “It’s about MF&RS over the years. I looked at the pictures and thought about the reason why they had been taken, each is inspirational in its own right. I think it’s really representative of the Brigade.”

The poet, who is still involved with the Fire Service as a School Fire Liaison Officer at St Ambrose Barlow and St Wilfreds Schools, spent just two-and-a-half weeks completing the poetry. “With the images I had, the words came easily,” he explained. “There’s one of two lads dancing on stage and I thought the world is a stage and when firefighters go out doing their job, it’s like being on stage as people are watching them. There’s another one of a firefighter on the telephone, and I wondered who he was speaking to. I thought about the Control Room, and the wonderful people there that people never really see.

“I was proud to be asked and even considered to write the poetry for the photos. It was very important to get it right. It shows the different jobs and different aspects of the Fire Service in a lot of different lights.”

Now the public will be able to view the exhibition as it goes on a tour of fire stations. Ten generic pieces of art and another five pieces that are bespoke to the particular district will be on display.
