£10,000 Art Prize & Exhibition Open for Entries…

Entries are now open for the second £10,000 New Lights Art Prize.

This fantastic award aims to provide a springboard for emerging artists who were born, are living, or have
trained in the North of England.

In addition, all shortlisted entries will be included in a biennial, high profile exhibition held in one of the
region’s most stunning spaces, The Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate, which will run from 21 September until
17 November 2013.

This is a fantastic opportunity to capture the attention of the art world. Judges include artist Norman
Ackroyd, one of Britain’s most famous contemporary printmakers, now a Royal Academician, who
originally studied at Leeds College of Art, Jane Sellars, Curator for Art at the Mercer Art Gallery, and Chris
Wadsworth, previous owner of Castlegate House Gallery in Cockermouth and respected arts writer and
lecturer.

Artists are invited to submit wall hung work in a wide range of media: from prints, drawings and paintings to
mixed media, but excluding photography and artwork which requires a power source.

Annette Petchey, Chief Executive of New Lights comments:
“Artists from all over the North, from Liverpool up to the borders of Scotland are invited to apply. Shortlisted
work will be exhibited in the New Lights’ Exhibition, a major show at the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate,
plus artists will also have the chance to win one of our awards, which include the Valeria Sykes Prize of
£10,000 plus a £2,500 Sponsor‘s Choice Award. The winner will also receive a mentoring package tailored
to their particular needs.”

The deadline for entries is 31 May 2013 and artists must be aged between 23 – 35 years. Current students
or artists who have graduated in an art-based subject from a college or university based in the North of
England with a Bachelor’s or Post Graduate degree will also be eligible. Areas include the historic counties
of Yorkshire, Lancashire, Northumberland, Durham or Cumbria.

The winner of the first New Lights Award, in 2011, was awarded to Newcastle based painter Nat Quinn,
who comments: “Winning New Lights has been a very important step for me in the transition towards
becoming a professional artist, it has been extremely helpful in allowing me time to concentrate on
developing my work.”

New Lights, is a charity which was formed in 2010, and this is the second prize to be sponsored by Valeria
Sykes, who will also present an additional ‘Sponsor’s Choice Award’ of £2,500. New Lights hopes to
announce additional prizes to be awarded from the 2013 exhibition
