We sent photographer Matthew Thomas (Mattomica Photography) to photograph the winner of the John Moores Painting Prize 2012, and here she is, Sarah Pickstone, with her painting ‘Stevie Smith and the Willow’ (2011, oil, enamel and acrylic on aluminium panel, 198.3 x 229cm). The ceremony to announce the winner was held at Walker Art Gallery, 7 September 2012.

I like her colour co-ordinated blouse it was though she knew she was going to win. I like the idea of her positive thinking and attention to detail.
