statement:
|
The main inspiration for my new work is from my continuing interest in the art of cartography and the idea of the visual travelogue. I’m interested in how differing societies throughout history have chosen to map the space they inhabit, in particular I’m inspired by the art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance and therefore I tend to use my own Italian journeys as a starting point.I initially use my original prints as a creative foundation upon which I incorporate ideas and images, from my sketchbooks, scrapbooks or photographs, through the use of collage and acrylic painting. My artwork represents a fragmented but continuous journey, that has been taken or anticipated, that is real or imaginary. |

I graduated in 1993 from Edinburgh Art College and in the same year received three awards: The Edinburgh Printmakers Award and The Anne Redpath Award from the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh and The John Kinross Scholarship (3 months travel through Italy) from the R.S.A and The Italian Institute, Edinburgh and London.
From 1993 to 1995 I exhibited successfully nationally before moving to Liverpool to embark upon my P.G.C.E, graduating in 1996. From 1997 to 2004 I taught full time as a Secondary Art and Design Teacher in Leeds. Since returning to Liverpool in 2004 I have been teaching, through short-term contracts, in a variety of educational and creative venues such as schools, museums, galleries and children’s centres as a teacher and freelance artist along with raising my young family.
