statement:
|
At the very heart of my practice lies a search for some kind of spiritual or divine order in nature, and furthermore an exploration into the empirical tensions between the natural and the artificial. My work is essentially concerned with an investigation into organic processes/states through man-made intervention and representation of landscape. The conceptual divide between geological time (deep time) and human time is a phenomenon which I attempt to explore, particularly in my landscape video-works. My explorations and creative interests related to landscape and organic materials are conceived in the mediums of installation, photography, digital video and earthwork sculpture. Walking is a significant creative element in my artistic practice and I take great inspiration from exploring outdoor wilderness environments – the source of all my work. In spring 2007 I founded an independent environmental artists group called Gaia Project. The size and constitution of our practice changes in relation to the nature of our projects. We are dedicated to promoting a wider public understanding and appreciation of the holistic inter-relationship between the visual arts and the natural environment. Our objective is to carry this out through the co-ordination of site-specific cross-disciplinary visual arts projects, which aim to engage artists and public in an open dialogue. We work exclusively with artists who live and work in Britain and who share an active concern for climate change and ecology through their practice. Gaia Project is also crucially a platform through which I display the results of my own practice as a visual artist and my experiments in relational exhibition-making. |
