Liverpool artwork of the week 2011-09. Airports for the Lights, Shadows and Particles 2006-10 by Jyll Bradley at the Bluecoat 25 February – 1 May 2011.

The work shown here is one of a set of four duratrans fitted in brushed aluminium lightboxes. There are also four powder coated aluminium sheets and the walls are covered in William Morris wallpaper ‘Bird & Vine’.  These are in the upstairs room which forms just part of the exhibition covering the past 20 years of Bradley’s practice.

The unusual exhibition title comes from a quote by John Cage who once described Robert Rauschenberg’s white paintings as ‘Airports for the lights, shadows and particles’. He recognised that a white surface is sensitive to its surroundings. Reflections arrive and depart, creating a greater awareness of the viewer’s environment and space.
